Babies Coming Out Of Nests

Wonderful pics Kaz.

A couple of questions for you:

1) At what age do they go into the kindy cage?

2) At what age/stage of development do you take them out?

3) Roughly, what are the measurements of your kindy cage?

4) How many, roughly do you have in there?

The reason I ask this is that yours look younger than mine, I am not sure how soon some of mine can go in the aviary. And I often worry about overcrowding.

1.

The age I put them in a kindie cage depends totally on a few things.

*Whether or not parents are feeding them well in the breeder cage.

*Whether or not they may be in danger of a mother going feral trying to start another round.

*Whether or not they are flying around in the breeder cage going crazy and upsetting the parents.

*Whether or not they have begun to eat for themselves.

Most of those babies had been out of their nest up to a week...some less than that. Average age 5-6 weeeks.

I created a seperate kindie cage for these guys.............17 in all as those that werent eating well yet would be encouraged by the ones that were. The second I put them all together in there they came alive. Chicks that may have been sulking a little or huddling in corners suddenly became active and alert and interested in their new mates. Suddenly they were all eating and eating well. The cobalt cock baby wasnt eating at all yet on his own until he discovered the joys of grated carrot for his breakfast earlier today and now you cannot stop him eating. The light stays on all night for warmth and also it makes them play and eat all night. Full food dishes at nightfall are suddenly empty by breakfast time.

2. answered above I think.

3.

I currently have four kindie cages on the go....largest is a metre tall by approx a metre wide by approx 600 deep. I have one kindie cage for all Omelette's last batch of babies. A kindie cage for all the greywing family. A kindie cage for the guys I just posted piks of, and the largest kindie cage for my older babies who are moulting. I have hesitated in putting some of my yougnsters out in the aviary due to some cold snaps we have had which caused the loss of three youngsters I had out in the aviary...............therefore I hesitate to put the others out unless it warms up a little. Three weeks from now the new flights will be done and they will all go out and have warmer weather and more space.

4. Total of babies in various kindie cages would be approx...........50.

086-2.jpg This one is a cock bird. He is skyviolet but it doesn t show in these photos. his Dad is violet opaline and hi mum is a skyblue normal.

023-1.jpg The one behind the dom pied is a surprise bird. Its a dark green it seems but has more black melanin on it than any I have had and its an unusual green shade right now.

The dom pied and the sky violet may turn out be show quality, and the dark green I am not sure about yet...maybe not.

I'm not sure about the Dark Green either but I'm keen to see what it looks like AFTER the first moult, in particular the cap colour!
