Crumble V Seed

Featured Replies

So I went to the pet store last night to get food ready for the arrival of my tiels today and was talking to one of the staff. She advised us to get Passwell's Crumble. Its good for our tiels and budgies and the staff member said it was better than seed. She also said that seed was quite fatty and the birds having seed all the time is like us eating pizza all the time.

Is this right? I've never heard that anywhere else. I buy seed from the same pet store and also offer our birds carrot, corn, celery, an occasional millet spray.

Thanks.

You have entered into the big debate, Simon - bigger than Ben Hur. If you are going to go with pellets, I'd say you should get them to eat 2 kinds. Variety is good for them. It will take time and patience to change your birds to a pelleted diet. Do not abruptly stop giving them seed if that is what they've been eating.

Yes, seeds are fatty. There are nutritional deficiencies in an all seed diet. If you stay with seeds, include a variety of kinds and ensure that your birds receive their vitamins from as may sources as possible.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are an important part of a budgie's diet, no matter what dry food you give them.

Mine eat seed's and a variety of other stuff, instead of ditching seed completely, add a bit of both pellets and seed.

We have excellent articles in the FAQ section about feeding a variety. It really shouldn't be verses but balanced if your bird will eat both then give him both, an all pellet diet is not good for them just like an all protein diet is not good for us, you need to have a variety of foods so they can get their food from different nutritional sources. :grbud:
