Posted June 24, 200916 yr I have the opportunity of acquiring some cockatiels for free! I have just finished my aviary and my budgies are enjoying their new home with some quails. Is it okay to pur cockatiels in with budgies? Thanks Simon
June 24, 200916 yr Yes, I have had budgies and cockatiels living together for over 15 years and never seen a budgie V's cockatiel fight. Just dont over crowd the aviary as they need their own space.

June 24, 200916 yr Space is the biggest issue and are you going to do any type of aviary breeding? Breeding budgies and I assume tiels can get very protective and this is where fights can led too. I believe Liv does closed breeding and not open aviary style breeding which is a factor in her success.
June 25, 200916 yr Author Liv, can you tell me a bit about your closed aviary breeding? Do you just take a pair out and put them in another cage to breed? Do they need to be in line of sight of other budgies or is hearing enough? And when do you know to isolate them? One last thing. I have a pair of budgies that are related and seem to be taking an interest in each other. Sadly, I lost the father. :WobbleSign: Any suggestions? Thanks. Simon Edited June 25, 200916 yr by Simon
June 26, 200916 yr Space is a big consideration. If there is enough, and enough feeding stations around the aviary you may be fine. The concern is that even though your budgies are smaller than the 'tiels, the 'tiels are gentler birds. Budgerigars are more aggressive, and have been known to harass 'tiels. They don't care that they are smaller than the bird they are bullying, but if the 'tiel has had enough the size difference gives them a slight upper hand. Just watch for any aggression, and have a ready space for the 'tiels should you need to move them out of the budgie aviary.
