Single Female Budgie

Featured Replies

Posted

As much time as I spend with my new little female budgie.

I think she is a bit bored, and I do worry about her while I'm at school or when I go out and leave her alone.

She is still young so I'm thinking it will probably be less troublesome if I get her a budgie friend now, right?

I should probably choose a young male, correct?

Cos I hear two females together can fight, or is that wrong?

And in case of a male, I can keep them in separate cages, next to each other and allow them time out of their cages to play together.

Is that okay?

Looking for some advice, thanks :)

A couple of things when introducing a new bird...

1. I would always get the same sex... (Unless you plan to breed) Females will not fight more or less then males... Makes no difference in my book.

2. You'll need to quarantine the new bird in another room away from your darling for 30 days...

3. I'd introduce them over time and in then keep them together. They'd be much happier. Just make sure your cage is big enough for two!

4. Try and get your new girl from a breeder, as it will be of better health and if the breeder knows there stuff, you will get a female!

5. Just remember, having two budgies verses one can make them become less attached to you, and taming can take longer. BUT I agree with your thoughts on getting one. If it was me, I'd get another girl. Quarantine for 30 days and in that time work with them both separatly, and then when they're together, you can either continue taming separate or together... each is different.

*** Just a note on Quaratine... it is done to stop any sickness your new bird has been passed onto your orignal bird. Even if they don't look sick, they can still cary something. When in quarantine... even if they call to each other and try and get out of their cage... don't bring them together... even in the same room is pointless... TOTAL separation for 30 days... I look at it this way, 30 days is not long, and it gives you time to work with them one on one***

Great advice :D

I completely agree with Maisie, excellent advice!

Maisie's advices sounds great to me. I think you should get another bird for your budgie, it'll make her happier. And maybe even tamer when they can learn of each other. I have 4 budgies and they are all lovely.
