Can Females Be A Good Tame Pet Too?

Featured Replies

I just got a new really young budgie, not sure if it's a male or a female yet.

Question is... if its a she, then, will it grow older to be moody and all that?

Because it's sweet as pie now but it's still really young.

Yes I will make sure I'll hold it and tame it every day, but I was just wondering :D

Looking for advice cos there seems to be a lot of really experienced budgie people here :D

thanks :)

Hello. Welcome to the forum! :bliss:

I will tell you my story of Polly. See if it helps.

On day, when i was coming back from a holiday, i heard screeching the box so i ran in to investigate, and one of my first Lutinos had been hurt by another female budgie invading the babies nest :bluebudgie: This lutino that had been hurt had all blood over its back so i brought it inside to take care of. Indeed, if i hadn't, she would have died :grbud: i tamed her, took her where i ever i went, so that she would trust me more. It turned out to be a girl, who we christened Polly. However, there are other loud budgies outside unfortunately, so whenever we brought her inside she would fly on the curtains to show that she wants to get out. However, this girl was very tame, and it would even try feeding us! Now she is the prettiest budgie of my flock.

Anyway, i think that yes, girls can be a tiny bit vicious, depending if you have budgies outside. If not, i belive that a girl could be just as tame.

Anne, one of the Admin, has all females budgies and she absolutely adores them :bluebudgie:. Females tend to be quieter which makes them more appealing to budgie owners, yes they can be moody but aren't we all :bliss: .. I would say more around molting time is when they are, the 1 thing about females is that you do have to watch that they don't get egg bound even if they are not around a male budgie they can still lay eggs some do some don't.

We've got a male and a female inside and the female is by far the gentlest and tamest of the 2 (although the male is also very gentle and tame too) and we haven't had her as long as the male. We keep them in seperate cages but they spend most of the time out of their cages if we're home and she sometimes gets a bit bossy with her brother, but never with us. I'm told she probably won't talk but that is of no concern to us at all. Admittedly they're both still quite young, but so far so good.

The short answer is yes females certainly can be good tame pets ! :)) Just because you have a boy there is no guarantee, in fact there is no guarantee that ANY bird will get tame. BUT, in all cases no matter age or sex: with time, patience, dedication and understanding it can be done.

About behaviour. All budgies get a bit cranky at puberty and when they're moulting. As for the general idea that hens are moody, well....

Here they are together

And here they are with me

So it's not necessarily an unbreakable rule!

I hope this helps you :)

Yeah I think mine, whether it's a boy or a girl, will be one of the sweet ones :)

I do plan on spending lots of quality time with it :)

Thanks again :)

i have a female budgie turbo

she got attack by her mum in the box next morning i got up and checked up on the birds and she was in the corner floor of the aviary with blood and feathers missing from her head so i thought i would look after her about 3 weeks later i begged mum to keep her so i did she has only ever once bitten me she talks goes on finger and all of that way more tame than my previous male pet

i think females can be tame aswell but they can get eggbound like one other of my birds

hope it helps

cameron :(

Females can be just as tame but when they decide to bite it will hurt more than when a male budgie bites (usually). Also males find talking easier as they're generally more vocal, female budgies can talk too though.

I had an absolutely beautiful female budgie. We got her very young & didnt know the sex so we called her Wally & referred to her as "he" - i still think of her as a he actually!! But she was the friendliest thing EVER, & she did actually talk! Not a lot, but she could say "Wally", "eh chicken", "Wally chicken" & various combinations of these! He also copied a few of the whistles we did, & even made the noise of the squeaky bathroom door. We had a favourite song, & every time it came on the radio i would call him (oops, i mean her!) & she would fly to my shoulder & dance with me! She loved anything even vaguely like a nest hole & would crawl right into our pockets, or into a sock you had just taken off. Actually, if you opened your mouth she would practically climb right in if you weren't careful! :( She loved to play on the floor too, & would sometimes hop along on 2 feet like a sparrow, i've never seen another budgie do that! She would "kiss" us while making big smoochy noises. We once went away for a weekend & left a neighbour to change her food & water etc, & when we returned she was so mad at us! She would sulk in her cage & not come out to play!! So from then on we brought her with us if we ever went away anywhere.

In her last years (she lived for 11) she did start to get vicious towards any male people who came into the house & would fly to their shoulder then bite them extremely hard, & she did actually become egg bound when she was about 10- don't know why she suddenly decided to have an egg after all those years (& there were no other budgies around!) but the vet was able to remove it fairly easily. But we had many fabulous years with her, she was loads of fun & a great little friend!

My females are just as adorable and tame as my males are. They love to mess around and they love to be with people they know. So don't you worry about that ;)

Yes, I had a female once, and though it was fully grown when I got her and she had a mate and was quite wild after time I could leave the cage open all day and she came out almost every night for a cuddle.
