Yawning after a tiring preening session.

Hi guys. Thought I'd share some pics of my new budgie Cinnamon. Cinnamon was in her own cage in a separate room but hadn't eaten any food for around a day and seemed pretty stressed. For her own health I decided to break quarantine and move her in with Muppet (after careful observation and a meeting outside the cage). Please don't hate me...

Happily 15 minutes after being moved in with Muppet she was eating, and she's been happily eating and drinking ever since. Muppet has been a great older brother and only seems to get cranky when she does something dopey like taking off and landing on his head!

Images too large so turned into links

How long did you have Cinamon for? It's very normal for new birds not to eat and look stressed. I personally believe there is never a good reason to break quarantine, esp the reasons you gave. Many a member on here have learnt this lesson from experience, and I just hope you don't as well. I don't hate you, I just wouldn't have done it myself. All that being said, they are sweet birds.

I had her (and was observing her) for a day and a half and she hadn't eaten. I guess I probably was pretty stressed too, really wanted to see her eat. I'd spread seed and greenery around her cage (Floor and in containers) and she showed no interest at all. Every time she heard Muppet n the other room she'd start climbing around the cage (looking for an exit I think).

Like you I hope they both remain happy and healthy. Only wanted to do the best for her.

Cinnamon is GORGEOUS- such beautiful bright colours! :)

Wow. Very nice colours and very cute :) Do you know what her parents looked like?

I agree here with maisie, never a good reason, birds do eat but we can't tell because they husks their seeds and if you blow on the top lightly you will see the empty seed shells fly off, next time if there is come here and ask first before breaking quarantine and we can help you through it.

Congrats very pretty.

Thanks guys for the advice and support (even though I may have done the wrong thing). Cinnamon is happy and settling in well.

Cinnamon is very pretty :D and yea it gets pretty depressing watching them jump all over the cage like that and trying to get out when they hear the other birds.. all my birds have gone trhough that but it is rewarding when you wait for the quarantinte to be over and introduce them at the proper time. It makes you happy to see them happy and to know that you did the right thing.

Wow Lobostar, I just love your birds. You are very lucky to have such pretty colours. :bluebudgie:

Quarantine was broken on my suggestion as being quite a small framed bird and having bred her myself I thought it was detremental to her to learn to eat in her new home, lest she became sick as would've happened quite fast with her... Thus far, it's worked...

So if it falls on anyone's head, it's mine, not Rudy's.... yes it's against protocol, but in this situation I beleive it was warranted and the best thing for her. We've had many people who've stuck to their quarantine with my birds and then contacted me only days later to let me know the bird went into a depression, refused to eat and had died. I did not want to see this happen. It's always hard for them to adapt, but when it becomes a life and death situation over just a "possible" sickness passing worry (me knowing the bird is well healthy) I found it to be the better option.

Thanks for the photo's Rudy!!! She looks very happy with her new "man"

At the risk of being lynched :boogie: I will put my hand up and admit that although I have followed quarantine with my other birds, I broke it with Max and Maurie for the same reason as above.

I'd had Max a few days and he didn't seem to be doing well, seemed miserable, and wasn't eating at all. Normally I would chalk that up to the stress of coming home, but when I picked him up I realised he was all bones, and I was worried that he might actually die if he didn't start eating very soon. After a bit of soul searching I decided to take the risk. It wasn't a decision made lightly, considering I was putting an unknown into a cage with my favourite bird.

I didn't do it because I thought they would be adorable little friends, or because I couldn't be bothered setting up a second cage, or because I was lazy.. it was because I really thought he wasn't going to eat without a nudge from another bird. Unlike libby I couldn't be sure that Max came from a healthy flock, but I took the risk because I thought he might die, bony little dab.

Not 10 minutes after putting him in with Maurie, Maurie hopped down and started eating, and Max followed him down and started eating too. After a minute of that, Maurie hopped back up and started attacking his millet spray, and Max went to investigate that too. He was immediately happier and more perky, and between the two of them they stripped the millet completely, so I could relax about him eating. They are fast friends now and Max hates being away from his big "brother".

Big fat no-no, I know a lot of people might waggle fingers, and I would never advise breaking quarantine.. but I guess sometimes you have to weigh things up. Honestly, I'm still uncomfortable with having done it. I know it could have ended badly. But I did what I thought I needed to do. I feel better now knowing that there is a real risk of birds dying from refusing to eat for a few days after moving homes. Thank you libby. I still don't feel good about breaking quarantine, but that makes my worry and my decision feel a little more justified.

(still don't like that I did it though!!)

Lobostar, both budgies are just beautiful... :boogie: ... I wish you the best of luck with them and hope all goes well... If I was in your shoes, I would have done the same thing... Good luck to us both...
