Posted April 28, 200916 yr recently there has been 149 people...soon to be 150 who have died of swine flu.....will it affect my budgies? LIST OF AREAS SWINE FLU HAS HIT - britan new zealand mexico america australia and a few others..... what if my budgies get it?
April 28, 200916 yr Swine are closely related to humans which is probably why humans are able to catch it. However there are some viruses that can be spread from humans to birds... best to always minimise contact with your bird when you are sick and always wash hands before tending to them.
April 28, 200916 yr the current Swine Influenza that is causing trouble is a mutation of the avian flue, swine flue and humane influenza. The WHO is worried at the moment that the this could mutate again. It is now at a level 4 Pandemic. Current Countries effected is Mexico, USA, Canada, Spain and a case detected in Ireland or Scotland.
April 28, 200916 yr I am quite worried about it. over 150 deaths in Mexico alone, They think their is no hope keeping it out of australia.
April 28, 200916 yr 10 confirmed cases in new zealand, students and teachers who just got back from mexico. Not really worried about it though.

April 28, 200916 yr hmm... don't live because you might die!!! lol your budgies won't get swine flu unless you or someone/something in contact with them get it wear a mask and wash your hands before and after handling your budgies if you are concerned Edited April 28, 200916 yr by DrNat
April 28, 200916 yr I'd be more worried about myself and my family catching it. If we did come down with it, the budgies would be the last thing on my mind.
April 28, 200916 yr WHO has 6 levels of pandamic. The swine flu is currently rated at level 4. We have been told that the Australian Government is prepared for this event and have been stock piling medications, masks and gloves. If you don't feel well... get checked out. Minor cases don't have a problem. Most of the deaths in Mexico was from patients that presented themselves very sick and in the later parts of the illness.
April 28, 200916 yr Mariah, the Health Organisation has made no mention of animals contracting the disease but I would hazard a guess that it has not been investigated. There is no way to answer your question as quite simply no Health Organisation has investigated it. I would simply do as DrNat has suggested.

April 29, 200916 yr I wouldn't be worried... just use high levels of cleanliness and do everything you were taught as a kid, wash your hands before you eat, wash you hands before and after touching livestock etc etc. and you should be fine...

April 30, 200916 yr I am quite worried about it. over 150 deaths in Mexico alone, They think their is no hope keeping it out of australia. Mexico has a high population with aids and if someone who has it gets sick then they show symptoms of this flu before it kills them. There is really only about 15 confermed cases with swine flu the others were just symptoms.
May 1, 200916 yr The whole swine flu thing is interesting, to say the least. The 150 deaths in mexico were from suspected cases of swine flu or as it should be called Influenza H1N1. The actual confirmed deaths from H1N1 are very little. I think the number may have been around 8. But don't quote me on that. Influenza is actually a virus type that started out in birds in the viral family Orthomyxoviridae. It has mutated in order to pass on to pigs, horses, humans and other animals. Pigs are good at helping these diseases to break the barrier from avian to human diseases because (i can't remember properly, but it is something like) they have similar cell types to both birds and humans. However for your budgies to catch H1N1 from you I think it would have to mutate back inorder for them to contract it. So pretty much you would have to have H1N1 before your budgies get it and if that is the case I think you would be more worried about yourself than your budgies who would probably be fine. All the influenza stuff is a bit foggy for me as we did it over half a year ago and I've forgotton quite a bit, so I may not be completely accurate. But do look it up if you are interested. I think they mentioned that H1N1 is a human virus and they don't want to call it swine flu any more because it is harming the pork industry (you can't catch it through eating pork).
May 1, 200916 yr Everything I've been reading up on agrees witht the stats Sailorwolf quoted. Another thing is they have absolutely no way of confirming how many cases of swine flu there have been in Mexico as they don't keep great records in the first place and not everyone would have gone to the doctor anyway, so there is no way of telling the mortaily rate of this flu as yet. It could be as low as .01% (or they might have said .001%, I can't remember now) which is no different to many other strains. There has certainly been a media beatup about this, but that has serverd a valuable service of raising public and government awareness. I think this flu will be delt with very effectively.
