Edited by KAZ

My boy has just developed an appreciation for baby spinach leaves. He is also fed broccoli and a vairety of sporouts - snow pea sprouts seem to be his favourite, but I've also tried mung beans and alfalfa.

Looking at your list I noticed lettuce was there. I believe lettuce can cause problems like diarrhoea due to its high water content and should be used very sparingly if at all.

Cabbage would be very similar to Lettuce as far as nutritional value is concerned, very little, mostly water so it can cause diarrhoea... as for beetroot I know they love that, there are so many pictures on this site with pics of birds looking like they massacred something... lol. There are a few lists on here of plants/fruit/and vegies that are safe... might want to give them a look over as the lists are fairly long ^_^

can i give them

1.banana - I have never thought to give my birds banana. It does not seem like a natural part of their diet and I would be reluctant.

2.beetroot - mine love it,, but look terrible after it. I get fresh beetroot, cut them in half and put them on a skewer. they love it. Prepared for a shock first time you see them after they have had beetroot though, it truly looks like there has been a riot

3.lettuce - too high in water content. Not good for them as they will develop running poos

4.beetroot leaves - yes, they eat them all, but the leaves wilt rather quickly

5.apple or carrot - if you are giving apple, take out the core and seeds, then they will love it. carrot, i would grate it.

6.cabage.i was told that cabage was bad for them is that true - too high in water content as far as I can tell.

7.cucumber - I have heard of this being given, but I never have. I would not.

8.bokchoy - yes, they will love it

9.silver beet - yes, the will love it.

10.celery stalk and leaves - you can, but once more, it is veyr high in water content and there is little nutritional value. Celery is used more as a filler than anything else.

11.mango - how good is your budget - I would say no - eat this yourself

12.grapes - too high in water content - no nutritional value

13.corn - yes, they will love it - fresh corn on the cob.

14 . brocolli - mine love it, it is like budgie catnip for my aviary birds - especially my new clearwings - Nubbly 5- any thoughts?

You have to remember that it might take them a while to try things, so if you put it in there, and no one eats it, do not give up on it. You need to try it for a month at least.

Also remember fresh food does not last long, so by all means, let them try it, but you need to ensure you remove any veges before spoilage occurs. Spoiled veges have the potential for disease to fester.

1.banana - Never tried it.

2.beetroot - Yes My birds love it.

3.lettuce - Too much water, not good, similar to celery

4.beetroot leaves - never tried.

5.apple carrot - Never tried apple, seeds are bad. carrot is excellent.

6.cabage.i was told that cabage was bad for them is that true - its toxic.

7.cucumber - never tried.

8.bokchoy - yes mine love it.

9.silver beet - yes mine love it. Do not give it to breeding birds too much as it stops calcium intake or somthing.

10.celery stalk and leaves - no, too high water content.

11.mango - yes.

12.grapes - I've never tried.

13.corn. - my birds number 1 fav vegetable.

hi i was wondering if enyone can tell me some fruits and vedgies i can give to my budgies and cocatiels.can i give them1.banana2.beetroot3.lettuce4.beetroot leaves5.apple carrot 6.cabage.i was told that cabage was bad for them is that true7.cucumber8.bokchoy9.silver beet10.celery stalk and leaves11.mango12.grapes13.corn.i don't give mine all the stuff on the list but can you tell me some things i can give them out of my list and things i can't.is there any other things i can give them?what do you feed yours?\My budgies' favourite is corn followed by broccoli. They seem to like softer things than carrot. Apple, peas, mung beans, silver beet and mashed potato or pumpkin (a bit messy) with no milk or butter. Banana probably would be messy, too. They also peck on dandelion flowers.I think lettuce & cabbage would have little or no nutritional value for them.If they get used to a variety of stuff while they are young, they should be good eaters.Oh, and Dave is right about not leaving veg in the cage too long. I found that corn goes off really quickly in summer It goes gooey and smelly. Then it sticks around the beak and inside the beak. One of my cockatiels got an infection by his beak which I traced to stuck corn. My birds all love corn so much that they land on it as soon as it arrives (not every day because too much could be fattening) and start gobbling it. I take away any corn or peas not consumed before I leave for work.

No one's given them banana? Mine like it, I only give it as a treat. It gets sticky and gross if I leave it too long.

As a general rule, the best things for them nutrition wise is dark green leafy things (silverbeet, spinach, broccoli, bok choy) and orange/yellow veggies (carrot, capsicum and corn). Fruit should be fed but they are more like treats (high sugar and water content), veggies have more nutritious value.

Some types of cabbage are toxic so I'd avoid them.

I'd like to clarify that lettuce, celery and other high water content things do not cause true diarrhoea (the dark bit of the faeces is soft), instead it increases their urine content (more watery component to the faeces), and it is not a sign of sickness when that happens. So it's not causing them actual harm. BUT the real reason we don't like giving them is because of their high water content, it doesn't give them anything good either, so you're better off feeding them something that will be good for them at the same time.

You can give beetroot and beetroot leaves, but be warned it's messy, oh and their poops might go brown or even red. Try not to give them stuff out of a can, it's usually full of additives.

The main things to avoid are onion, rhubarb and avacado.
