Posted April 21, 200916 yr How can you tell if a Spangle is also an Opaline? I've seen heaps of photos of Spangles with a lot of colour through their wings, and yet some are not Opalines..(or at least so they've said) So what exactly are the differences between a Spangle with a lot of colour and an Opaline Spangle? Thanks..
April 21, 200916 yr Well usually the black markings are replaced by body colour markings (but not always) and the coloured markings are thicker than the normal black spangle. Usually the normal will have some head and neck barred markings although generally thinner and fainter than a normal bird and the opaline spangle doesn't often have any barred markings. Usually opalesence is present on head and neck of opaline (often on normal too but opalines USUALLY heavier). Other than that there is sometimes very little difference between the two and questionable birds can come up from time to time. Sometimes, if you don't know the history of the bird, it'll come down to breeding results and what the bird breeds on. Having said that some questionable normals come up from time to time that seem to be a combination of both normal and opaline varieties. Edited April 21, 200916 yr by nubbly5
April 21, 200916 yr I have found that a bit daunting also as I have been told that most my spangles which I thought were spangles have been told they are opaline, it is to do with the mantle on the back of the bird. Can't remember the name of the lines but I think they say and I could be wrong because my memory is **** but if the lines are brken or not there they are opaline. Some one else can come and fix up my explanation because I know this sucks
April 21, 200916 yr Author Oh..anyone have picture examples of this? I also want to know if my Spangle is an opaline as well...she is a girl so I'll have to wait until her son has babies before I'd know for sure, and she is Pied so the barring between her wings mostly isn't there anyway..but if someone can tell me if she is Opaline or not that would be great.. April 21, 200916 yr I have to agree, she is a normal Spangle Skyblue Hen. Spangle Opaline Grey Green Cock
April 21, 200916 yr I would say your hen is a normal spangle as well, i have a skyblue opaline spangle. This is a photo of her.
April 21, 200916 yr I'd say the hen isnt an opaline spangle too. Also, daves opaline spangles are so gorgeous. The colour is so vibrant and the feathering is awesome!
April 21, 200916 yr This picture is opaline spangle and this one This one cinn opaline yellow face Believe it or not this is also a opaline spangle several people including 2 judges told at a show last year that is why I get confused as I thought she would of been spangle and the next picture is opaline too and again I would of thought spangle Opaline spangle Opaline Cinn Spangle Opaline Spangle And I do believe and really hope this is a normal Spangle or I will be completely confussed

If you paired either of those first 2 hens to a normal opaline cock and any of the young cocks were not opaline then the hens cannot be opaline. Similarly, if you pair the spangle cobalt cock to a normal opaline hen and get any normal (non opaline) birds then he is not an opaline. Be interesting to find out for sure. Daryl
April 21, 200916 yr Is that an opaline spangle violet green? I just wonder, because it doesnt look grey green, nor does it look normal green to me. It looks like a violet khaki color?
April 21, 200916 yr Also, daves opaline spangles are so gorgeous. The colour is so vibrant and the feathering is awesome! They have filled out well. Thanks Dean.

Daryl Daryl I would normally agree with you but last year at 2 shows 2 judges and several members told me that they were better marked opalines meaning that don't have as much or hardly any colour in their wings which is meant to be undesirable these days on the show bench. The cobalts father is Opaline, so that makes him split opaline, I find the whole thing confusing Edited April 21, 200916 yr by splat
