I have had a 1 leg bird before and he was fine in the aviary.

Me too Pearce but this hen will need recovery time :)

No news from the vet so I decided to call him and find out what was going on. He said she wasn't responding to antibiotics and the foot was no better. :)

He then said it had to be a tumour. When I asked him for the basis of this prognosis he replied it was because she wasn't responding to treatment.

When I pressed him further he said that taking a sample of her leg was dicey because she might start bleeding profusely which would be hard to manage and the stress of it all wasn't warented.

He said I should come in to discuss amputating her foot.

I cannot tell you how pissed off I am. :(

any updates on her?...this is why i get pissed off with vet's to...they assume everything, make u pay top money to have them fixed, and yet they still dont do **** to fix it....the vet obviously has no idea what he's doing....tumor from a cut? come on.... i'd sue him if he lets the poor thing die from it

Well actually I am happy with her care and ultimate treatment. I was pissed off that I'd no longer be able to breed with her again as she's been a valued breeder. But once I saw the foot without infection it was obvious that it was a tumour .... previously I just didn't want to believe it 'cause I didn't want to contemplate the consequences.

So here's the tumour:

Here's Fussy Chook in her new cage:

Here she is with 'friends':

Oh wow!....the vet did the right thing then, that looks seriously infected....waited any longer it could have gotten worse and gone up the leg more.....she will be in less pain without it :)

Poor little girl.

Budgies are quite prone to tumours unfortunately, due to how inbred they are as a pet species. Here's hoping it is something benign.

You called it Sailorwolf...

Poor bird, she looks like she's settling into her new surroundings now though...

Actually that's just the tumour without infection.

She looks good Renee considering what she has been through. Im sure she will be back to 100% in no time.

Indeed, could do with another toy or 2, budgie's get bored easily :) but seeing that their's a few of them in their, they probably wont need them. does she seem happier now that her foot is amputated? like her temperment for example?

No she's fine now. She was chirping all the way home and just a few minutes ago she was preening herself. I think I'll keep here there with the other old timers/ disabled birds.

I am real glad she has bounced back so well Renee

...could have been a worse outcome. She looks like she will be doing real well from here on. Hope the vet wasnt too outragious with costs.

How much of her leg was saved ?

Vet costs: $150.

She has 2cm of leg left, the vet cut it above the joint.

Thats the same as my DF dom pied PEGLEG. She will learn to use the stump as a prop to balance like he does. The price you were charged was very low considering...your vet did right by you :P

Indeed, some people who are cruel would let it die and save $130 by buying another one for $20...like i always say, a bird's health is priceless

Yes, the vet was very considerate. :( As I have mentioned on other posts, the last bird I lost was back at the end of December last year when I was away on holidays- I do not intend to lose another - especially NOT to negligence. :P I did consider that it was ironic that I was spending $150 to turn her into a pet but that's just an afterthought as I could never let her die a miserable death.

$150 is a very good price and you got a good result. :D

Mattdog2: I'm a little offended by what you said earlier.

It seems that I've been to saying that a lot lately.

What part offended you, just incase you didnt understand the meaning fully,

i meant that some people who have no compassion or care whatsoever would let it die rather then taking it to the vet, just so they can save money, and when i mean a birds health is priceless, it means you cant put a price on a bird's health..., even if one of my budgie's was sick or in some case of injury and it costed say $500 i would still pay it, as i couldnt live with myself if i let it die

changed u to you

a very good result renee :D

Why cant you still breed with her next season??? Surely she can have AI if she can not balance while mating...???

I would be offended,if a vet charged me $150

to chop off a budgies foot.

I saw a foot cut off many years ago with a pair of sissors.

The bloke was giveing a demo on how to trim the feathers

around the vent & snipped the foot off,

I understand $60 was for the amputation and the remaining $90 was for 6 days hospitalization costs and daily injections of Lincospectin.

I can't tell if you are being serious or not, but cutting a bird's foot off with a pair of scissors is inhumane to say the least. A vet charges you for the anaesthetic and pain relief that they give to the bird as well as the anatomical and professional knowledge to create a less painful amputation with minimal blood loss and trauma to surrounding tissues and using aseptic technique (keeping it sterile) and keeping a budgie happy and healthy.

I mean if you take that attitude, it's just as easy to cut off a human leg with a chainsaw, now isn't it. So why should we get a trained and professional surgeon to amputate your leg and charge money when you can effectively do it yourself for free at home?

Liv I don't know if she'd be wanting to breed with it anyway seeing as most budgie tumours are due to genetics.

I am actually with Sailorwlf here Macka. I have to say I thought your comment was a bit on the harsh side. Not really the right message

Indeed, to cut off a budgie's foot with scissor's is absolutely careless and inhumane as sailor said,
