April 20, 200916 yr Author What would be the reccomended dimentions of a 'holding' cage. I'm supposed to keep cages etc... to a minimum, I rent and my partner already thinks I have too many things to move, although more than a boot load is too much for him :offtopic:
April 20, 200916 yr Are breeding cages too small to keep them in for a few months???The few months is why I said the breeding cages werent good....a few weeks yes a few months no. I did the few months thing some time back and found hens all had issues after with egglaying. It was determined that the hens had lost muscle tone needed to expel the eggs by being held in smaller areas for a few months. What would be the reccomended dimentions of a 'holding' cage. Or breeder cages with removable centre dividers, thereby enlarging a space ?
April 20, 200916 yr Author I doubt my ability at making interlocking modular breeding cages but a wire divider would be do-able. I was originally planning on making my breeding cages 60cm long, 50cm deep & 50cm high. So if I remove the divider or make a removable divider it'd be 120cm, 50cm, 50cm. Would this be big enough for them to get the exercise needed?

April 20, 200916 yr Author I'd have to put 4 in there otherwise I won't have enough room for them all.
April 20, 200916 yr I'd have to put 4 in there otherwise I won't have enough room for them all. you could probably go 6 in that space
April 20, 200916 yr Author I think that I'll still put them into divided breeding/quarantine cages for a month at first to get the pair bonding happening and then I'll remove the dividers to give them the exercise they need for about 6-8 weeks then divide them again for breeding if they're in good shape.

April 20, 200916 yr Does anyone know of Joe Darmin or _______ Dodd? Some of the birds I purchased had stickers on their cages showing what line they came from but I don't know of any lines??? Joe Darmin is a top breeder been around for quite sometime. The other is Peter Dodd. Top breeder and ANBC winner of Black Eyes.
April 20, 200916 yr Peter Dodd was a recent judge at St George Branches annual show, it's 50th Anniversary show. Peter was invited specially to be a judge as he was a judge at the first show, some 50 years ago. He was very young then, only in his early to mid 20's I would say, but he has been involved in the hobby for over 50 years, so he has a very good knowledge and has, and is continuing to breed some very good birds.
April 21, 200916 yr Author Well that's good to know, the 2 Albinos are Joe Darmin and the Lutino Cock Peter Dodd. Too bad I can't remember any of the other names mentioned to me........ I suppose I'll get to know some of the big breeders in time

April 30, 200916 yr pair 2, 4 and 8 are my favourites. LOVE the yf's and in pair 8 that cocks colour is amazing. Also I like the grey spangle.
June 25, 200916 yr Pair 3 - cock looks cobalt or maybe mauve (that can look a bit grey) not grey..............? Really like pair 4. Ooooh so exciting pairing up.
June 25, 200916 yr Author Pretty sure he's grey, he does have a blue tint though. If he did turn out to be mauve that'd be fine by me I'm looking for more dark factor birds :WobbleSign:
June 26, 200916 yr Nope you are right. Just in the other photo he looks like a cobalt but yep definitely grey.... sorry.
June 26, 200916 yr Nope you are right. Just in the other photo he looks like a cobalt but yep definitely grey.... sorry. I was going to go the other way! I reckon in the first photo (above) his colour is way too blue to be a Grey and his cheek patch not grey enough either. Looks like a Mauve (or Violet Mauve) to me. I guess we get a lot of variation depending on the calibration of the monitor and the ambient light we're viewing the pictures in. Edited June 26, 200916 yr by Daryl

I just compared his cheek patch to the greygreen on the perch, next him. It is hard to tell,I thought also in the first picture,it was a mauve. PS perhaps the onwer of the bird can tell us,the cheek patch colour.
June 26, 200916 yr Author A few more pics of the Grey/Blue taken today Grey Split Albino. Some are a bit blurry sorry.
