April 17, 200916 yr She's undoubtedly protective of her nest and her territory, and thinks anyone who comes close is a threat. If you don't want her breeding, take the eggs and box out, and she should come around. Fingers crossed .
April 17, 200916 yr MM is correct, she is being protective of her nest, I would leave her a lone if you are breeding her as not to upset her and cause her to abandon the eggs, on how often to check on her you could ask that in the Breeding Help Forum.
April 18, 200916 yr hi everyone i have a budgie turbo is a hen and recently layed her second egg ever since that i go up to her cage it hisses at me when she comes out for a fly she sits fluffs her feather up and doesent move she use to fly around everywhere play etc can anyone reccomend something or know why turbo is hissing and not so happy thanks cam s I see in your profile you have one budgie... If this is the case, her eggs won't be fertile. Where is she laying them? If you have a nest box, remove it. She doesn't need one. I would try and discourage this egg laying behaviour... Change her cage around... a change can often do the job. Give her more 'night' hours... make sure she has plenty of fresh fruit and veggies and add a calcium supliment to her water... I know you have had trouble in the past getting her to eat fruit and veggies... try corn on the cob... mine love it. Perhaps you could post a photo of her cage here... she must have some where she finds suitable to lay these eggs... we need to stop this behaviour quick smart.
April 18, 200916 yr Author she sits on the bottom of the cage and lays them. no i dont have a nesting box. Here is a photo of her cage: Edited April 18, 200916 yr by maesie
April 18, 200916 yr Hey Cam... a few suggestion from me. I know you're only young and may not have much money... but she could do with a bigger cage. One like my girls have is perfect: But for the moment... I'd start by re-arranging her cage. Try not to have branches running the length of her cage, as it encourages them to be lazy. Your natural branch looks great too, but I would try and get two shorter ones, or break that in half and put one at either end of her cage... a little away from the ends so she has room to sit. Different thickness' are good too and she shouldn't be able to touch her toes together around the branch. Is she bonded with you... usually mirrors are a bad thing as they cause her to become attached to her 'mate' in the mirror... maybe get rid of them. Where do you keep her and what time do you cover her cage for bed time... Try and increase her night hours... I think 12 ish... is ideal... Keep an eye out for any toys she's particularly attached to and swap them around... change is the key. I know you've had issues getting her to eat veggies, I'd keep trying with them... corn on the cob, peas etc... often veggies in a dish with some seed on top works well. Also, try giving her some native branches with their leaves etc... she will enjoy eating them and pulling them apart... which also might take her mind of laying. A nice big branch that she can get lost in is cool!!! At the moment we need to break her routine... and stop this laying... along with the above suggestions, move things round a little... if she's in your room, can you re-arrange it so she's in a different spot? It's all about making her feel less comfortable in her surrorundings... might sound mean but she feel comfortable enough to lay eggs, and being a lone budgie, she should'd do this. That's all I have for the moment. I hope some of these ideas help and others can comment more. Let me know if you need anything else and I'm happy to help you out with more photos aswell. Great advice especially about the cage size and especially about the mirrors.
