Eating Upside Down

Featured Replies

I've often wondered why.. ....... .....

Maxie, my rather unsociable girl, insists on hanging upside down to eat out of the seed bowl.

She has been doing this since I got her almost 2 years ago. She has one of the normal white seed dishes with cover that hangs from the side of the cage, it has a little "sit" bar for them to sit on and eat.

However she hangs from the wire side of the cage, above the seed dish, upside down, dipping her head in the dish to eat. :hmm:

Its a wonder the seed goes down (up??) to her tummy and doesnt just roll back out of her nose!!

Anyone else have budgies with strange eating habits??? :)

I've never seen it in my life but it would be funny to see. I guess she likes to be different:D

I would love to see a picture of this :P I have never seen it either, if she could talk you could ask her but since she can't we will have to assume it is a lovely way to eat :D

Wasnt easy but I finally managed to get a photo of Maxie's upside down mealtime! Not a very good photo but she is very unsociable and if she thinks I'm near she quickly races back to her perch in "attack mode'!!!!

I managed to pretend I was busy in the kitchen when I kind of snuck up on her... here she is...

It is a weird way to eat but it must be comfortable for her or she would not do it. It is a cute picture.

Ahahaha I love it

Cosmo's only weird eating habit (that i can think of) is that he has a dish like that too, and whenever he is finished eating, all these oat hulls are sitting on the lid of the dish. Somehow he must pick them up and eat them outside the dish, but for every other type of seed, the husks are on the inside of the dish.

:)  That is just too funny!!! I guess if it was an issue you could always try giving her a dish without a lid and see if she does it... but that being said... I think it adds to her quirkiness...

I wonder..... if there was no lid ..... would she fall in, ......kind of do a nose dive... ??

You're quite right, she does have a quirkiness,I have never been able to understand why she is so aggressive towards me.. so I guess I'll never understand why she eats upside down.. (probably.. because she can!!! )

awesome you got a picture that is way too cute :)

That is very cute ;)

It's nowhere near as funny as Maxie though! I think it's a good thing that I don't have Maxie- she would develop a complex because I would be laughing hysterically at her every time I saw her eating!

Haha... Smokey is similar with his oats... I find that the corner of his cage below his seed bowl is always piled with his oat hulls... but not the husks of any of the other seeds! I wonder what it is about the oats?

Haha this is cute. My female budgies Honey also does the same. Sometimes I find her holding both side of the cage and hanging her head upside down like huh? I came here to see if it is normal. I find it veru funny and cute but I was worried if she is stressed.
