Posted April 7, 200916 yr Hi. I have some questions about Budgie. I got it 7 days ago? The seller said he is 2 month old (I do not believe him). Got it yellow, but now it turns green (chest and back), He has also stripes on a forehead. He also sits on my finger and eats from hand. 1) What is normal living temperature for budgie? 2) My budgie is not curious? He is mostly sitting in the one place. 3) He is warbling (singing, talking) very rarely. Is it okay? 4) How much time I can spend with him? (So, he is not getting tired from me or other reasons) 5) When I can let him get out of the cage? 6) How can find out his age? p.s. Sorry about my English. Edited April 7, 200916 yr by Kristapsl
April 7, 200916 yr He could be moulting so that would make his colour change. My birds are in anywhere from 20 degrees celcius to 35 degrees celcius. I would say around 25-30 degrees celcius would be best. He has only been in a new home for 7 days, he will need time before he starts to get used to you and your environment. He will become more talkative when he bonds with you and feels safe.
April 7, 200916 yr Welcome to the forum by the way. I am sure someone with more experience in caring for one budgie will come along soon to help. Edited April 7, 200916 yr by Pearce
April 7, 200916 yr Hi. I like to keep my room for Merlin right around 75 degrees F. 2) My budgie is not curious? He is mostly sitting in the one place. It is not that he is not curious it is that he is still trying to get used to his surrounding and is probably very unsure of himself. What is your cage like, your set-up inside? 3) He is warbling (singing, talking) very rarely. Is it okay? Yes, that all comes with becoming comfortable with his cage, his surrounding and you . 4) How much time I can spend with him? (So, he is not getting tired from me or other reasons) Birds never tire of their owners because they are flock creatures they love to be with you, spending a good quality time of 2 - 3 hours a day which can be broken up into increments of 10, 15, 30 minutes a day is good. 5) When I can let him get out of the cage? When he is comfortable with his surroundings, he has learned the step-up command, and feels comfortable with you, I would also think of clipping his wings for the first time out so you don't have a bird that is flying into wall, and you chasing it down to try and get it back in his cage (that can turn back taming big time), if you read the article in the FAQ called Taming your Budgie you will get a lot of tips on this and more. 6) How can find out his age? Post a picture here we can help you out. If he has yellow bleeding into the blue and it is turning green he is a Yellow Face Type 2 which means the more he molts he may end up being completely green or splotch, a picture here is best and we can help you out but seeing him visibley. p.s. Sorry about my English. Your English is just fine
April 8, 200916 yr Author Thanks for your answers. Here are the answers fto your questions. The cage is the 40cm by 40cm by 70 cm (15.7 inches by 15.7 inches by 27.6 inches). It has square shape. The upper part is like here (http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showtopic=17858) first bad cage. It has water dispenser, food dispenser (like a cabinet), inside there is two perches (one lower little forward, other higher), cuttle fish bone (hope to get right), swing and two toys (ring chain with bell and ball with the bell, no mirror). And here is the picture of the Gogi. Best what I could get it. The color of the nostrils are light blue with some rambling spots (color like light purple). So how old he can be? Is he male? April 8, 200916 yr And here is the picture of the Gogi. Best what I could get it. The color of the nostrils are light blue with some rambling spots (color like light purple). So how old he can be? Is he male? He is cute.... grey green opaline spangle boy. Under a year of age...most likely around 5- 6 months or so because he has iris rings but they are light. Edited April 8, 200916 yr by maesie
April 8, 200916 yr Author I do not know, should I need to make new topic, but he has like a double layer beak (it looks like). Should I need to be worried? It is not possible to make any picture.
April 8, 200916 yr the beak layers are normal most likely from rubbing his beak on different objects to keep it conditioned I agree he is a cock around 4-6 months of age and the mutation Kaz said, he is gorgeous.
April 9, 200916 yr Note a couple of spiky head feathers coming through in this photo ? It means he is beginning his first moult. Might get a little cranky ( bad moods ) and a little itchy. A good time to have plenty of protein and extra vitamins for him. Protein in the form of mashed boiled egg two or three times a week would be good. Edited April 9, 200916 yr by KAZ
April 9, 200916 yr Author Yes, he has couple (three of them) head feathers. I tryed to give mashed boiled egg, but he is not eating it. Any advices, how to make him to eat it.
April 9, 200916 yr Yes, he has couple (three of them) head feathers. I tryed to give mashed boiled egg, but he is not eating it. Any advices, how to make him to eat it. Add a little grated carrot a few kernels of sweetcorn and sprinkle his birdseed through it. Sometimes pretending to eat it yourself makes them interested in it
April 9, 200916 yr to get my birds to eat their veggies it was probably a 3 month process but what I did is remove the bird seed at night and in the morning I would chop all the food they wouldn't eat and then I would mix and sprinkle the top lightly with seed I did this for 3 months on a regular basis and both would eat their good and sticky type of foods too. At first they will pick off all the seeds but gradually you will see they will get stuff stuck on the beak and ineventably they will end up eating it and realizing it is not bad. It is time consuming and you may waste food but it is worth it. Also the FAQ section has great ideas under the Nutrition Section.
April 11, 200916 yr Author Some more questions. 1)My Budgie is shivering (in the cage and out of it us well) I think he is not afraid. The temperature in the room is about 23C (73,4 F). He shivers when he is double of the size. (To become sullen). Why he is shivering? 2)He also opens and close beak. It looks like he is talking without a sound or chewing something. What he is really doing?
April 11, 200916 yr 2)He also opens and close beak. It looks like he is talking without a sound or chewing something. What he is really doing? I know when my birds do this it usually means they are too hot. They open their wings, and open and close their beak constantly. They are hydrating themselves I beleive. 23 degrees is not hot so I do not know why yours would be doing it.
April 12, 200916 yr Author Any answers on the last two questions. Happy Easter everyone. Edited April 12, 200916 yr by Kristapsl
April 12, 200916 yr He is yellowface/ goldenface as he has a lot of grey on his chest. And you can see he is going through his first moult

What he is really doing? Any ideas? these are the symptoms of sickness. a bird that is fluffed up and shivvering is feverish and needs a warm lamp on them (25 -40 watts) and needs to go to the vet for diagnosis. The opening and closing of the beak with no sound is mouth breathing which is also a possibly sign of respiratory issues (it can be also from stress or excersise, but only lasts a few minuites)
May 5, 200916 yr Hate to butt in this post but I think my little one can be sick. He is very active and eats normal. But he dose have those symptoms (shivering [not much you can't really tell unless you stare] and open and closing of the mouth). Also, when he stands on my shoulder next to may face he seems a little hot. I thought that was normal for his body heat. Also, he sneezed a few times lately. You think he has a cold? You think, just incase, I should take him to the vet? Edited May 5, 200916 yr by OkiBird
May 6, 200916 yr Just to let you guys know. I took Jokey to the Vet to make sure he was okay. The Vet said that the opening and closing of the month could of been from him just being tired. He looks fine and there is no sign of him having a cold or fever. Body heat is normal. The Vet did take a poop test and he has some (I don't know what it is called) mold in his body??? The dock said he needs little more vitamins in his diet. The vet gave us some white powder to sprinkle on his seeds and some drops to put in his water. Also gave us some calcium chips to put in his food. So we went to the vet for something else and found out about something different. I am glad we found out before it got serious.
