I believe there is no harm in treating with ivermectin even if there is nothing to treat... people do it as a precaution all the time, don't they?

So how do you put the ivermectin on the bird? Some on the back of their neck or in their beak?

I was told it worms them as well so I will do my other birds with it soon too.

What kind have you got ? The spot on is for the back of the neck...part the feathers and put one drop in the skin.

Normally it is a one off treatment - a drop on the back of the budgies neck (just like putting Frontline on your cat or dog!), but if the vet has said to do it that way over several weeks then perhaps what you've been given is a different preparation in which case follow the vet's instructions.

Does that still worm them?

Okay just picked up the birds. I took 2 of them, the one with the worst scaly face and the one with the worst feather mites. Tony (the guy who feeds them etc) will take care of the other 3..two males who both appear healthy, as well as the female..all of which have the beginnings of feather mites and scaly face but not very badly at all.

I took some pictures, and went to the vet and bought some ivermectin, and feather mite spray for them both. Here they are, a young (6-12 month old) yf2 male:

 

And a sky blue male with feather mites:(at least, I'm assuming it's feather mites..I'm not certain. Am I right?)

I've never seen anything like it, what a disgrace. good job rescuing them.

I have a male budgie with feet just like that. He came with about 20 other budgies 12 months ago. His beak also keeps growing non stop and it's all crusty. Not one of the other budgies had the condition though. For almost a year I've been clipping back his overgrown beak and nails (some of which are flat and grow upwards) and treat him for beak mites and nits. Yet he hasn't got any better. He doesn't seem to be suffering, eats well and is even starting to breed. I'm sure if I didn't clip his beak he'd probably die eventually.

 

How can I get rid of the crusties permanently?

What treatment have you been using....topical applications can be hit and miss. Spot on ivermectin most often gets rid of scalyface in one treatment. Feather mites needs a good spraying all over with Avian Insecticidal Liquidator.

Oops, I forgot to reply to this sorry Kaz. I've been using a little bottle of....I'm not sure what the brand is, but it's a common one from pet shops and vets. It's for scaley face. I trim the excess growth off hte nails and beak, then apply the scaley treatment with cotton buds. I've been doing it regularly for a year but I'm not getting anywhere.

 

I've heard putting a fine layer of cooking oil on top of their water dish coats the beak in oil and somehow kills the mites. Is this true?

The one with scaly face has greatly improved. Yesterday was his 5th treatment of 6, so he is almost done. I think all feather mites are gone. By the way, how many times etc should I spray them for feather mites for them all to be gone, and for how long?

Depends on the brand and quality of the product you are using. Avian insecticidal liquidator is the best one I know of, and I would say once only with that product. In my expereince there is no real saving in cheaper petshop or supermarket products most of the time.

Well I bought it from the vet, it's called 'Avitrol Bird mite and lice spray'.

I dont know that one, but check the birds over and see what you can see....if its done its job :hooray:

Avitrol is okay. Its got basically the same stuff as the better brands, but its more diluted.

Avitrol - Pyrethrins 0.5 g/L. piperonyl butoxide 5 g/L

Avian insect liquidator - Piperonyl Butoxide 125 g/L, Permethrin 25 g/L

 

In my opinion you cannot beat A.I.L

Aslong as you steer clear of pet shop brands such as Avian-Science you will be right.

Okay cool. Does anyone know how much I should spray them and for how long..ie, every day for a week, or something? It doesn't give any directions except to 'repeat as necessary' and I can't tell any difference in their feathers until they moult..

With a.i.l once is enough.
