Posted March 21, 200916 yr I realized yesterday my bird has been pretty quiet of late , so I thought maybe a general checkup at my vet . He's taken a poop swab and I get the results back on Monday . Also she's had this bad foot forever that has pretty much no movement and has got worst over time , vet said it could be Gout or Arthritis and has given me some anti inflams to give to her , after I said yes to the ant inflams I asked whether he thought it would improve and he replied no I don't think it will, so my question is should I go ahead and give her the anti inflams over the ten day period causing her stress while I try to administer if there not going to work ? The foot now dosn't appear to give her any pain just hinders her mobility but I set her percher's up to suit that problem best I can . Cheers Toohp
March 21, 200916 yr If your budgie is not in pain and the anti inflamatiries are not thought to improve mobility, then i wouldnt bother. You could try giving your budgie apple cider vinigar in her water and omega 3 oil in the seed - this combination helps human arthritis and both elements are safe for budgies - worth a try in my mind
March 21, 200916 yr Did you have your avian vet x-ray your bird many times immobility of the foot is not due to arthritis but a tumor inside this is a common cause. Please note, I didn't say she has a tumor but should be ruled out. It can only be ruled out by x-ray because the breastbone makes it impossible for a vet to push in and find these sorts of things like in a dog. This is exactly what my avian vet said why x-rays are recommended.

No She's never had an Xray , she's has the fatty tumours which have gone down a bit of late, me being able to get her weight down through diet as she was way over weight . The vet did mention that gout is usally caused by kidney disease and he has alway's told me he thinks he will find kidney problems if we investegate further . I was going to suggest to the vet a blood test maybe I should go with an Xray too , see what reults if any come back in on monday from the poop swab . Thanks for the replies .
March 22, 200916 yr Go for an xray. If she has a tumour pressing on her sciatic nerve then you will know why that is happening. If the kidneys are inflamed however they can also put pressure on the sciatic nerve causing lameness. Anti-inflammatories can reduce the inflammation. Also an xray can tell you what joint is affected if any etc etc. A blood test can test for kidney function . Go for an xray first. Edited March 22, 200916 yr by Sailorwolf
