For Any Members Here Who Breed Mice?

Featured Replies

Just 3 hours ago I found 7 little baby (1 day old it looks like) mice. My parents were going to feed them to the cat as we don't want more wild mice in the house. But I couldn't live with myself if I knew I let them die that horrible death..so I offered to try to raise them myself. :)

So now I have 7 little baby mice on my hands, absolutely no experience with mice, no pet mice and never had any, and don't know anyone who could help. So I'm in trouble here..all I've got at the moment is soy milk, so when I tried to feed that to them they understandably did NOT like the taste..I'm going to go buy some normal dairy milk in an hour (or less) and I'll try to feed them again. I'm going to give them to friends or try to sell them to the petshop if, by some miracle, they do survive.

I have a lot of questions, so if anyone here can help, please please pm me ASAP. Thanks. :glare:

P.S. Sorry this is about the health of another animal other than a budgie but I have no one else to ask and I know at least a few of the members have mice/rats or had them. They can just pm me if anyone can help so I hope this is okay?

baby wild mice :) - yuk! kill them and if you really want some mice, get them from the pet shop. Wild mice are riddled with disease, if one bites you, you could get sick.... I know it sucks but wild mice have no place in suburbia or in the wild. they dirty our food, kill our birds and endanger our native wildlife. :glare:

I have to agree with Liv, plus at that age they are almost impossible to raise anyway and they don't develop nice temperaments when they grow up they are still 'wild' (I tried fostering some with my baby pet mice once)

I wouldn't buy cow's milk, it is not very nutritious. Go for kitten or puppy milk formula.

What you can do is soak a piece of cotton string in the milk and let them suck the milk out of it, if you don't have a teat or syringe. Although they may accidentally swallow some cotton though. So try a tooth pick, like you would for baby budgies, instead. but if you can't find anything else cotton string will work. They will need feeding every 1-2 hours during the day. During the night I ma not so sure, you will have to research it.

How many do you have?

How big are they?

A 1 day old mouse is pure pink with closed eyes and is about 2 cm long.

They start getting coloured skin at 4 days old, with fur coming through around a week and open their eyes at 10-14 days old. At 2 weeks old they start to wean (from memory) and will eat things like budgie seed, cat biscuits and cereals. They also will eat grass too. (pretty much what a budgie will eat, plus cat biscuits and cereal).

You will need to keep them warm. So a heat pad is a good idea.

Almost like raising baby budgies. Pm me if you need to ask more. But do some googling on the internet.

I agree with MB, wild mice grow up quite mean. I have fostered some onto my pet mice before and they were not nice.
