March 11, 200916 yr i never new that you needed a licence fore wild baby ducklings i live on a camp and pave lots of ducks in a big dam we have lots of wild ducks there to and when ot ducks lay they have wild duck eggs under them and look after them we normally take the duck out of the dam with her babies and put them in the back yard because in the middle of the dam there is a island but the ducklings can't get up there. One of our mother ducks dumpedd her babies when they where yong and we had to look after them or we put them under a chook that had rotten eggs and was upset and she had 7 ducklings that kept her buissy and she was so happy and we some times bring the ducklings insie there is normally 6 pet ducklings and 2 wild. and by the way how the pet ducks got wild eggs thay kicked the wild bucks out and stle there eggs.
March 11, 200916 yr Everything is connected. The fact that this duck is in this situation matters. Why it is in this situation matters. What we do matters. What happens matters. It is all related. It can't be anything but related. I am just mad because people already know how to do a great many things instinctively or can easily learn to. If you enjoy it then it isn't work really, better if you get paid for it too. It's not about being for or against anything, it is about finding the balance of give and take, and better ways forward, because at the moment it is all too taxing, for most everything. "One of our mother ducks dumpedd her babies when they where yong and we had to look after them or we put them under a chook that had rotten eggs and was upset and she had 7 ducklings that kept her buissy and she was so happy and we some times bring the ducklings insie there is normally 6 pet ducklings and 2 wild." Now that is a brilliant solution! Turning an unproductive, unhappy and wasteful situation, into a productive, happy and useful one. Wisdom and initiative - more of that. "and by the way how the pet ducks got wild eggs thay kicked the wild bucks out and stle there eggs." Yeah, that's what I did to this topic! See...related. What is happening with the baby duck?

March 14, 200916 yr Wow, I can't believe someone reported you! I'll always encourage people to seek out a licenced carer because they have the experience to deal with the animals but I raised my share of animals before I got my licence and most who are now carers probably did too , I'd never report someone who was doing a great job of raising the animal though. Ah well, at least the baby is being looked after even if it's nt by you, if you find out from the vet which carer it went to you should be able to get an update

March 14, 200916 yr Sucks to be Australian! Here, we can raise any wild animal that we find. Unless of course it was a rare and endangered one. I once had a duckling brought in by a cat and I rang the bird lady of the SPCA and she asked whether I wanted to raise it myself or bring it in. It was badly injured unfortunately and died later that day. To be honest I think the whole needing a license to look after injured or orphaned wildlife is rediculous for a common wild animal such as a duck, or magpie or what ever. For endangered natives I can agree on. I am guessing however that that duck was a mallard. Mallards are the most common duck and are out competing all native duck species. To need a license to look after it is rediculous seeing as they are a pest. The only animals I know that you definitely need a permit to keep here are possums and ferrets and generally if you find a wild one it should be destroyed. But if I wanted too I could raise any common animal, introduced or otherwise, such as a mallard, a pukeko, a rabbit, a mouse, rat, cat, kookaburra, sparrow, magpie, fantail, deer, pig, masked lapwing, rosella etc etc. If I found a kaka or a kiwi chick I would immediately hand it into DoC or the SPCA, because they are so endangered.
March 16, 200916 yr If I felt an animal being looked after was in danger then I wouldn't hesitate to report the keeping of said animal. However, if the animal was in good hands and being well looked after then I would not report it - even though I "reported" myself. I will forever regret calling and handing over the kitten my parents found. I have always wanted a rabbit and that would be about the only reason I would leave Queensland. I think about her all the time and second guess myself constantly.

March 18, 200916 yr I am just mad because people already know how to do a great many things instinctively or can easily learn to. Unfortunately, a lot of people DON'T "instinctively know what to do" when it comes for caring for animals. An example of this appears in this very topic where the OP asks if it is okay to put budgies and ducklings together. My son volunteers at the Donkey Shelter. They are always rescuing donkeys from situations of neglect or poor management because people don't know what to do and don't know how to care for their animals properly. A classic example is people feeding bread to their animals. A lot of people think it's okay to feed bread to animals when it is not. People think it's okay to put different types of animals together when it is not. People think if an animal is cuddly and affectionate it has been tamed when in fact it could just be very sick. During the recent heatwave a tiny ringtail possum walked right down out of a tree and approached my son who had some watermelon. This was a wild animal in a desperate situation, however it's "friendliness" shouldn't be mistaken for "tameness", however other people who were around believed the animal to be "tame and affectionate" when it was not. Just because people mean well, doesn't mean they have an instinctive ability to care for other species. You yourself said that even some humans have difficulty caring for their OWN young!
March 18, 200916 yr Or can easily learn to! Rather than doing it for them, change your approach, teach them how to do it and help them to find a better way. Otherwise you will be forever doing everything for everyone else all the time, and people ultimately will not appreciate you for it, they will just use you. There is no reward in that, and then you will be burdened by your own doing. We need better ways than this, and we all owe it to ourselves to find better and more inclusive ways to go about our purpose. Rather than seeing people's mismanagement of their animals as a problem, and restricting everyone from doing and learning anything, see it as an opportunity to show them a better way and let life flow. You might be surprised at the results, and you might learn something yourself in doing so. If we helped each other out co-operating in this manner the world would truly be a happier place. Regarding bread - bread is supposed to be made from natural ingredients. If it isn't then one has to wonder why humans eat it. I see all the birds in the city getting fat on left over junk food. They probably get diabetes too. One has to wonder about a great many things really. If anything is not balanced, then disease will result. There is an excellent book called "Changing Habits Changing Lives" by Cyndi O'Meara that talks about food, nutrition and food tampering, and what you can do to help yourself. At the end of the day, it really comes down to your own personal choices in life. Whatever you put your time, effort and money towards is what you value and create more of. What do you really want to create for yourself? If we know better, then we must do it better. By the way, life is a game, and everyone dies at the end of it. Eternal life is reincarnation. Most of our battles are really with ourselves. When you realise that you ARE the next generation, and you inherit the world you create, this changes your perspective. What matters is the knowledge and wisdom that you pass on and the heritage you leave behind after you finished playing this life, because you will experience whatever you create. Whether you agree or believe this, it doesn't matter. But wouldn't it be better to leave a heritage of less nonsense, less waste, more true and beneficial education, peace, prosperity and more positive achievement for humanity and all life on earth. Wouldn't it be better to create less unproductive work for ourselves and each other long term, instead of more. We already have enough work to do, but the unproductive work stops us from being productive. (There is unfortunately much productive work that goes unpaid in our society, and much unproductive work that is highly paid, don't you think we ought to reverse this trend.) Open your eyes and see that all your freedoms are gradually being taken away from you by all the rules and regulations gone mad, and we do it to ourselves, because we don't deal effectively and in an enlightened manner with the situation right in front of us and expect someone else to do it for us. Find your higher purpose and learn to do it yourself. Edited March 18, 200916 yr by DrNat
March 18, 200916 yr Author tahnks its interesting reading others pointsof veiws. i do think the permitts are silly in some aspects but also i realise they are there dor a reason, so people dont take wild animals as pets and also so a untaught person doesnt accidently kill the animal when it could have lived. but talking about permitts wont change a thing. if your that passionate about it then do something.
March 18, 200916 yr Nevermind Dr Nat, I won't bother  LILBABYBUDGIES it's great that you are trying to help an orphaned animal. Edited March 18, 200916 yr by Smudgie
March 18, 200916 yr Considering the duck in question has been taken by the vets and is no longer needing our advice, I am closing this topic. If further discussions on licenses etc... and wanted, feel free to start a topic based on that.
