April 10, 200916 yr Author Mum squashed the chick to death  How do i prevent that happening again? she is a maiden hen. will she get it right with the next chick???
April 10, 200916 yr Mum squashed the chick to death  How do i prevent that happening again? she is a maiden hen. will she get it right with the next chick???Usually they dont actually squash a chick. Its just that when we find a new and dead chick they look squashed having died and then been "kept warm" by a sitting hen. If it had a yellow belly it may have hatched too soon. Any food in its crop ?I believe the cock is split for Lacewing He is
April 10, 200916 yr I put big marbles in a tight sitters nests so it elevates her a little bit. Or put an older chick in the nest.
April 10, 200916 yr Author Thanks Kaz and Pearce. The chick may have been prem and mum hadn't fed it yet - i normally give mum until about 3pm to feed before i do it. The chick had died when i went to check if it had been fed.
April 14, 200916 yr Author An update on my pairs. These two have 4 eggs, one is a double yolker - 2 fertile so far These two have 5 eggs - all clear This pair had 8 eggs. 6 fertile. They had a chick, it died, they had another chick, it died too, then their third chick hatched and died too. I think she is killing them as they are perfectly healthy pink and active chicks. and died within hours of hatching. I have taken the last two fertile eggs and put them under another hen who is a proven mother and has clear eggs. (not the above pair) This pair had their first chick yesterday. healthy, fed and doing great. no plum eyes so not a DF spangle. This pair have 8 eggs - 6 fertile Edited April 14, 200916 yr by **Liv**
April 14, 200916 yr Questions from a member who knows little about hatching eggs... You mentioned a double yolker... 1) are double yolkers common? 2) are they ever/often fertile? 3) if fertile is it likely either or both chicks survive? 4) if both chicks survive, would they technically be considered twins? April 14, 200916 yr 1 - Not really, I've only had one. 2 - yes they can be fertile I know Kaz (admin on the forum) had 2 chicks hatch and survive from a double yoker. 3 - Chances are slim but it can happen as stated above 4 - I would think so yes, Liv I really really love this pair

April 14, 200916 yr Author I have another chick to this pair!!!! :) And, its got plum eyes so its a DF spangle This pair's 4th chick hatched today. It's under its foster parents, but its tiny, itty bitty. the smallest chick i have ever seen. Its a red eye, so must be another lacewing hen. The foster mum is a wonderful calm mother and the chick has made it a lot longer than her siblings so i hope she will be okay. There is one more egg to hatch from them.
April 16, 200916 yr This pair had their first chick hatch today What did you end up calling that handsome green fella Liv
April 16, 200916 yr Author This pair had their first chick hatch today What did you end up calling that handsome green fella Liv :D  He is very appropriately named LONG COCK because he is my longest budgie    No other reason... promise
April 16, 200916 yr Author The final egg from this pair hatched this afternoon under the foster mother. both chicks are fed and doing well with their new mum. the new chick has black eyes, unlike the first one that has red eyes.
April 16, 200916 yr Author Are you going to let them lay a second clutch and foster all the eggs ? hmmm... that could be a thought... i wasnt going to as at first i thought there might have been some genetic conflict. but it seems to be parenting rather genetic fault, so yes i might let them go again
