True Love...

My budgie, Kyra, has met my new cockatiel for the first time. (she is the only budgie who has, as she and the cockatiel are both the only 'inside' birds) And she reacted rather weirdly...like she is completely smitten. I had them both out at the same time to see how they would react to eachother..and she started following him around everywhere, when he flies somewhere she does..

She seems to have this irresitible urge to preen him. She kept going as near to him as he would let her, then sitting still and pretending to fall asleep (closing the eye nearest to him but keeping the other open)..at first he just glanced at her then started preening himself. Instantly she darted over and started preening him as well..he threatened her with his beak and hissed, and she moved back a bit and just sat and watched him. He watched her for a bit then warily started preening again and the second he did that..she ran over and started preening him. This happened quit a few times til he gave up preening himself and just watched her.

Now she's always sleeping in the corner of her cage (nearest to his cage), and hanging from the wire. Whenever she is out she flies over to his cage and tries to go in.

Is this normal or something, or is she one very confused little bird? I mean, she had bonded mate (who is a budgie, lol) and everything. It's just rather weird. :D

Some cockatiels will accept budgies as companions, but your one doesn't seem too keen, so it sounds like she needs a budgie friend again as she is longing for some birdy attention. :D

He really seems like he just doesn't know what to do with her...not used to a fan club I suppose. :D

Would it be possible to put them together in a small aviary I have inside, so she's happy?(I don't want to put her with another budige at the moment, I'm trying to tame her..and both her and the cockatiel are reasonably tame so maybe it'll rub off on eachother? The tameness, I mean) This has only been the last..two days, so I'd have to see how they are together. I could always just let them out together every day if that wouldn't work though. So why she is so obsessed with a cockatiel is because she is lonely for other bird's company? Or did she just take a liking to him...

Give it a couple weeks an he may warm up to her but if he shows signs of agression because he is irriated I would keep them separate, it is very common at least what I have seen with members with tame budgies and tiels together that they can get smitten with each other even if there is another budgie around.

Okay then. Thanks. Must be something about cockatiels that budgies like...let's just hope that crossbreeding wouldn't work, if they decided to breed or something lol..It isn't, is it? I mean, they both are birds and of a similar size etc, so would actually breeding them and getting babies work? (really wouldn't wanna see what kind of babies they'd have if they could.. ;)

i had a alexandra parrot in a large indoor aviry and a newly fledged baby in a inside cage both birds were allowed to freely fly and the budgie decided to fall in love same story exactly

after some months the budgie was allowed to follow kermit into his cage and then another month latter kermit was allowing buby to preen and sleep head on his leg very cute

they should become mates i think

no other bird did kermit exept sadley i had a visiter and their son grabed buby in full flight braking his ribs and causing internel ingerys he died in few hours

sad

i put all birds away when people come now

better still i dont invite people offten

I don't think you should put them together while the cockateil does not like her, as he may attack her and it's also not fair on him.
