Posted January 29, 200916 yr Way back in September after suspecting a hearing problem in ALex (4) we spoke to our doctor who referred us to the children's hospital for testing. Well he FINALLY had his test today and has been diagnosed with mild hearing loss on the right and mild to moderate on the left. Luckily it is only due to 'congestion behind the ear drum' (read excess fluid) and it should be a simple fix with grommits. We have to go back in four weeks for a second test to confirm that the problem is ongoing (she is sure it will be but it's 'protocol') and to see the ear, nose, throat specialist who will schedule the operation for us. On one hand it's sad that my poor baby will have to go through another day surgery (he's also had a hernia repaired) but at the same time we should see good improvement within days so we are looking forward to that
January 29, 200916 yr it is so great that you managed to get on to it at this stage though... many kids start school with similar problems which are not picked up until their learning is significantly impaired by the fact that they can't hear what they're being taught, or even worse, are labelled the "naughty kid" because they're always continuing to do the wrong thing when the teacher asks them to stop simply because they don't hear the teacher until he or she is yelling at them!
January 29, 200916 yr Author I had some suspicions for many months (my brother actually had the same problem when little so it was something that was 'in my awareness') and it was only when he stayed with my mum for a week when hubby and I went on our honeymoon that we decided to act. My mum handed him back to me and said "I think he's having trouble hearing". At that point I suddenly realised it wasn't just mothers paranoia, so I asked the kinder teacher and she said that she had noticed it but wasn't sure whether he was having trouble or just not listening. ANyway that was enough for me so I had an argument with hubby who still thought I was just being overprotectiveand I made the appointment. Now I get to say "Ner ner I told you so"
January 29, 200916 yr It is great that you got your answer finally and you caught it really early. Edited January 29, 200916 yr by birdluv
January 29, 200916 yr This is why men should not argue with us! Glad it got sorted, knew there was something wrong and glad it was something so simple to fix
January 29, 200916 yr MB sorry to hear that your son has to go in for surgery. Taumei went and got grommits done earlier this year and both my wife and I were worried. He was fine and it all turned out well. The surgeon that did it was fantastic. He really was great and answered any questions that we had. Taumei's hearing and speech has improved astronomically. I can't believe I am talking to the same boy. I am sure Alex will be fine. that he only needs one set.

To be frank, a hearing test is a small price to pay to hear the good news that there are no problems, and a worthwhile price to pay to hear that there are! So glad you were able to get on to it and have a team of people who are going to be able to get it sorted out for you! Good luck with it all!
January 29, 200916 yr Always good to have answers and I am glad you found them Prayers that all goes well.
January 29, 200916 yr I'm sorry he is having these issues, but great news that the solution should be quite simple. I'll keep you in my thoughts, and hope for an awesome outcome.
