Possible Inbreeding By Accident The Hen's Just A Baby

I'm worried to death for her health she's just over 3 months and looks like she's about to lay, I havent put anything in the cage to encorage them. She's in the cage with her silblings 2 females and a male, I havent seen anything happen like mating but I havent been in the room. But she looks just like her mother did when she was about to lay. I saw her but large yesterday but thought nothing of it... She's even pooping big I'm so scared I was crying she's not even mature. neither is he, he's a whole week younger.....I've seperated them.... please help....

What should I do?

Please help I'm in agony

There is not a nestbox or anywhere for her to think of creating a nest is there? Budgies engage in recreational sex and they are not too picky about partners. I have seen some terrible combinations in my aviary. Often I find eggs on the aviary floor. When I ask about this, I was told by more experienced breeders that this is usual for the inexperienced hens to lay from the perch.

If you are concerned about her being eggbound, you can put some calcivet in the water to assist her. You can also give her a drop in her beak. The calcivet will not cause an adverse problems.

If you are really concerned that there is no improvement, then an avian vet is always a safe option. If the vet says all is fine, then you have paid for piece of mind, and that is never bad.

I'm also worrying so much she's still a baby and as you can see they havent even matured or had there first molt.... I'm so frustrated that I can't do nothing....

Don't stress Jodie, there is no reason to allow her to raise a clutch, she will simply lay them off the perch and that should be the end of it. Budgies aren't always the brainiest of critters and they have no idea who their siblings are but she may still do it even if the male wasn't in the cage. It's only inbreeding if you allow her to raise the eggs

Oh my, that does look like egg bum

Dave has given great advice. i hope she is okay.

She's frightening me so bad I compared it to a picture I took of her mother before she layed a clutch of seven eggs it looked just like that....But on a mature bird...

It should be fine. Even though it's definitely best to not let them breed before a year, it doesn't mean something terrible is going to happen every time they breed earlier. There's a very good chance she'll just lay the egg and be fine. Now you know about it you can try to stop it happening again. It wouldn't be good if she kept laying lots of eggs while she's still growing up herself but it's unlikely that this one will be too bad on its own.

Hope she lays soon to give you peace of mind!

Good news

I was just going to bed when I heard a huge squark!

So I zoomed into my room, Found Kiwi perched up in the farest corner of the cage with a full formed egg on the floor in the other corner.

I felt hugely to blame, but I didn't think they'd try to mate untill they mature which is 3 months away.

What should I do with the egg?

should I leave it in case she wants to eat it?

Why did they mate so young?

It does'nt make sence, as you can see in the pictures they are still very imature. Cere's aren't mature, they have Bar heads and no Iris's

I'm going to Look for another cage for the brother to go in today it was a good thing I was saving money.

If you want her to breed in the future you don't want her eating the egg.

If you take it away she might lay more, but if you leave it there she might try to sit on it. I'll leave it up to the others

Okay, Thanks

Throw the egg away sweetheart. She may lay another off the perch but she will stop. Best to throw this egg away.

I agree with Kaz turf the egg and then reduce her daylight house this will reduce her feeling of sumer and the laying process can be stopped by that. You did nothing wrong. *hugs*

Agree with the others... toss the egg out. Up her night time hours and give her some extra calcium to help her along... She'll be fine... not your fault at all.

Thank you all for being so nice and thanks for the help

Good to hear she passed the egg safely. I agree with the others, there is nothing wrong with tossing away an undeveloped egg. Giving her calcium in her diet is vital right now as she is still growing herself and the egg/s will be taking essential calcium directly from her bones

I hope she doesn't lay and more.
