Hi all well this has just got to be the best forum that I have seen, so much info and so much help it is great.

Well for xmas, I brought myself a little hand reared budgerigar and it was the best thing I have done. I have always wanted to have a budgerigar however never had the opportunity till now.

I have name him Angel as I am not to sure if he or she. This way if it a he then I can say that I named him after the Angel tv series, if he turns out to be a she then she is named Angel because she looks like a angel. (I will try and post a picture when I get home). He is the funniest babe I have seen, he just goes nuts for his toys and mirror. Every now and then we hear him fall off his purch only to see him jump back up and look around as if to say it wasn't me!!! So much character for a small bird.

I have made contact with Kaz and am looking for to attend the MDC meeting this weekend.

Can someone please tell me where I read up about and learn the different colours of Budgerigars? I have no idea what type I have, so when I post the picture it would be great if someone could help me out.

talk to you all soon.

Good to have you here Glen. Hope to see you at the MBC club meeting too on Saturday

How to post pictures is a link in my signature....yell out if you need help with that. Look forward to seeing your new budgie :D

Hi and welcome to the site. You'll love it here. Just a tip with the mirror. If you want Angel to bond with you, I'd get rid of the mirror. They can tend to 'bond' to their friend in the mirror instead of you. Without it I'm sure he'll be your best friend in no time. Good luck and I look forward to seeing him/her.

Hi and Welcome to the site.

This is a really good site to learn the different mutations: Budgie and Parakeet Place

Hey! This website is the best I have found for the expaination on budgie mutations! I used this site about a year ago when I started breeding. It's a good idea to print out the info (if possible). The infomation can be a bit overwhelming to start off with. Each time I went back and read over stuff I understood a bit more.

Welcome Glen to the forum. It's very addictive!

Oh well doesn't matter.

Girl???? what about the blue colouring around the nose??

Oh well doesn't matter.

Welcome :)

The misconception is if the cere is blue it is a boy but that is not true. Females go through a period called "non breeding" condition where the cere may turn a light blue with white nostrils like your hen. Males do have blue ceres in certain mutations and it is a dark and bright blue. Your hen's cere will turn a light brown, darker brown and even crusty like when she is in "breeding" condition. This does not mean you have to breed her it just indicates that she is at that point.

In our FAQ located at the top you will find a lot of information including information about mutation, different cere's on both males and females, nutrition and health and more so make sure you take a good look around and read in there. :D. It is always been updated.

Again, welcome and Angel is beautiful, you can also enter her for the Budgie of the Month Competition which is located in the Competition Forum.

Hello and welcome :)

Angel is beautiful B) I agree she is a hen. hens are gorgeous too - they just dont tend to talk.

She is so sweet looking! What a beautiful bird. I would love one like her one day  Definitely a hen. Yes it is unfortunate that the way to tell them apart has been a bit oversimplified so that most people getting a new budgie are told that "blue is boy". Blue is both--- pale blue and white are young girls, and deeper blue/purple is boys. But I'm sure she will be a lovely pet as a girl anyway.

See the two budgies on the banner at the very top of this website? The one on the left is a girl... the one on the right is a boy, and that is what they mean by blue. See his is unmistakably VERY blue. Hope that helps.

yes she is beauty :D:wub: and I am having a great time learning all about her. Can anyone tell me what short colours/ mutation she will grow into? From what I have read she could be classed as a graywing or a clearwing.

Cheers,

Glen

This is an old wive's tale. Girls do talk, but not as many do as boys do :)

I would say she is a Skyblue Opaline Clearwing and could be carrying the violet factor because I see a bit of opalansence around the neck.

I don't see spangle in her at all but it could be masked

A bit of a update on Angel

Well I have had her for just over a month now and she is slowly getting used to me. Although she was hand reared she does not like to be touched at all. After reading a lot about tamming, I started handing feeding her bits of broccoli and it took a while for her to like it and she did try to bite my fingers, I quickley realised that her bites did not hurt (unless she got me between the finger nail and flesh :) ) I just kept the broccoli in front of her and now she goes nuts every time I give her broccoli. Anyway after doing that for a couple of weeks, yesterday I moved the broccoli away from her, so that she would have to walk on my hand to get it. It took a while and she nibbled me a bit but she finally sat on my hand and ate the broccoli  I was so happy that it had finally happen. I will now keep this up for a couple of weeks and then see if she will let me touch her without any food in my hand.

I can not believe how hooked I am with this budgie, I have managed to get a 1m x 1m x 1.8m avairy for free which I am now cleaning and fixing up so I can start my own flock.

How many birds would this cage fit. I was thinking around 6.

Cheers,

Glen
