Whats Wrong With My Budgie?

Featured Replies

Posted

Hi, i brought my first 2 budgies a couple months back, at the time the guy had said the male one's wings had been already cliped. Since then him his tail feathers have fallen out, and his wing feathers keep braking off each time he attemps to fly (which he can't), usually accompanied with a bit of blood. This is probably why his wings looked clipped. He does chew his feathers abit (have treated for worms/lice/mites). Im really not sure what to do. Here some pictures.

Could be french moult - french moulters have a lot of trouble keeping flight feathers and tail feathers

The bleeding is from broken blood feathers. budgies can bleed to death from these so care must be take to remove the broken quill from the wing and then stop the bleeding (white pepper is a very effective coagulant)

Also... their cage is not idea ... Take a look at this link ---> http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=17858

He probably has Psitticine Beak and Feather disease, which is more likely than French moult by your description. Unfortunately it is untreatable. Take him to your avian vet and get him checked out.

It might also be a good Idea to tell the guy that you bought him off of that this is happening too.

okay, he is only in the small cage cause I seperated him from my other bird. If he has Psitticine Beak and Feather disease what does that mean for this bird and my other one. Thanks

Thanks for the links. Both my birds have been caged together for some time, so should i assume that my other bird will have this virus. I rang a vet and I can't really afford the consultation fee let alone any tests at the moment. Not sure really what to do, do i take the bird/ or both birds back? Do I put them back together and look after them as best I can?

Well, either way, I think that the person you got them off of should know that their flock is carrying the disease. As in, I think it would be a good idea to inform them.

Looks like french moult to me. Some unscrupulous people sell birds saying they are clipped to disguise french moult.

okay, Im a bit confused. French moult is different to Psitticine Beak and Feather disease? Its only his wing and tail feathers that are breaking off so that makes it most likely french moult. The info on Psitticine Beak and Feather disease indicated birds also lose body feathers.

If it is french molt do I need to continue to keep him separate from my other bird (they were caged together until 1 week ago)?

To be honest, we can haev all kinds of thoughts on what it is but we arn't vets and the ones of us that are training to become vets arn't there to give a proper examination on the bird so we can say, "It looks like French Moult." or "It appears to be PBFD." but we can't be certain, without the tests it would be irrisponsible for me to say wether or not you should put the bird back into the cage with the other bird... I wouldn't but thats just me...

In my experience you have a french moult bird. Simple. I have kept mine amongst other birds and have never had an issue with that. Check our FAQ section on how toi pull a bleeding blood feather as french moulters often bleed when new feathers try to emerge and you will need to remove the broken shaft.
