Posted January 17, 200916 yr Hello everyone, I have joined here today feeling very sad after returning home from the vet with my nearly 9 year old hen named Tilly. She has a parasite causing a stomach upset and a tumor on her bottom. I called into a local vet pretty certain that she has a tumor, and knowing that at her age not much can be done, but wanted medicine for her stomach upset that started yesterday. They insisted on me going home and getting her,so i did, the vet confirmed that she has a tumor and recommend a medicine for the upset stomach. The trip left her quite shaken and myself in tears. I am trying to do the best for Tilly and unsure of how long she will live or what to expect with this tumor. Any advice will be appreciated at this very sad time. Thankyou
January 17, 200916 yr Author I'm sorry to hear about Tilly.Did they say what kind of tumour it was? Thanks Sailorwolf The vet is not a bird specialist ,he said that himself when i went in, so he didnt really say anything other then that the tumor was in a tricky area and that he thought it would interfere with her internal bowel, i was too upset to hear much else, he just elaborated that it would be like operating on a 90 year old person, im not sure what to think. January 17, 200916 yr I'm sorry to hear that. It is quite common for budgies to get tumours as they get older. My mum has had quite a few that have, and she currently has one who is almost 12 years old who has had a tumour above one of her legs for several years already! She is very elderly though and can't get around much anymore, tumour aside. Some of my mum's budgies with tumours have lived longer than others, but it depends where it is and how fast it is growing. Ones in the brain are nasty because they have seizures, where as some slower growing ones in more fatty tissue areas, as far as I can tell, don't seem to cause as much bother. But an avian vet would probably know a lot more about what to expect from the type of tumour Tilly has. I hope that you get a lot more time with Tilly and that she is not in too much discomfort. And I hope you get to find out a little more soon about what is going on and what to expect. :hi:

January 17, 200916 yr Author Wow Krosp, 12 years old! that makes me feel better. When i was little we had a bird with a lump it couldnt fly but waddled around for a few years. My mums budgie also had a tumor on it's chest mid last year and he was operated on sucessfully by a wonderful bird specialist.I live a couple of hours away otherwise i would take Tilly to see her, she was really kind and caring to my mum.Tilly seems okay still in herself ,especially after car trip, she is eating, talking and screaching if the TV is too loud lol, but is having to wriggle around to poo and seems a bit off balanced on perch, seems to me it is weighing her bottom down?? Its just her age that is still concerning me the others budgies were only a year or so old.. so a better chance.I am hoping the drops will fix the parasite problem at least , half the battle for her. It would be great news if tumor was benign,so i will look for and see a specialist in this area.Thankyou all for you support. She was an easter present to my daughters who were 6 and 2 at the time. She has given us a lot of joy and laughter and still is at this stage.
