Calcium Over Dose. Before Breeding.

Featured Replies

heyy,

yesterday i started the post breeding diet for my budgies. one of these things i added in was a cuttle fish bone. i left them to it for two hours and then came back to check on them. bluebell had eaten all the cuttle fish and it was a very large peice too! so is there such thing as calcium over dosing ? is this counted as overdosing.

thanks xx Elise xx

I think you will find that the cuttle fish has not been eaten, bit just pulverized. Budgies tend to play with it rather than eat it. I dont think you need to worry about calcium overdose - they were just playing :P

Yes there is such a thing as calcium overdose. I would doubt she actually ate all of the cuttlefish though, rather shredding it instead. I also do not think that the cuttlefish shell would have enough calcium in it to cause that. If you are at all worried about her and she begins to look ill then take her to a vet. But I don't think the cuttlefish is enough to cause that. I've had birds almost completely destroy the cuttlefish shell in one day. You'll probably find most of it on the bottom of the cage all shredded up into little pieces.

Yes I agree with SW and Liv they tend to shred it away than eat it :P

Could it have blown away in the wind?

Even if she did eat it, she wouldn't be able to fit a whole cuttlefish shell in her crop and gizzard

I agree with everyone above. Try liquid calcium supplement. Its better than cuttlefish which is more of a toy than a dietary ingredient :hi:
