Pottery Feeder..pictured.

Featured Replies

I saw this in our local Opportunity shop today and wasn't sure what it is supposed to be used for but my idea was a bird feeder for my aviary? It only cost me $2.50 so I'll use it for something else if need be. It is pottery and quite strong. Can anyone please tell me if it would be o.k?

Cheers,

Trish.

Bummer Kaz... I didn't think of that!

I agree with Kaz... BUT could you try and use it as a feeder for veggies etc... It should be easy to clean, and if you just put it in the aviary when supplying fresh food and remove it once they are done... it 'might' be okay??? Not 100% sure but might be worth a try. You could always remove it if it looks like becoming a problem.

As long as it wasn't in an aviary with young birds in I would give it a go... I think it looks a bit nest like as well but give it a try and see how it goes... If they started using it as a nest I would remove it...

Could you plant it with seed and when the seeding grass is long enough ( about 6 inches or so ) hang it in the aviary to be eaten....and then start again ?

Thats a perfect idea, thank you!

I'd love to see a picture once it has sprouted! Reading people's aviary-related posts really makes me wish we had a backyard so I could build an aviary!!!!

Just potting mix or outside dirt? Does it have to be cleaned somehow (I mean from wildbird germs). It's an awesome idea, I'll start it today, I already have some sprouted seeds so I do it with them!

I peronally wouldn't use potting mix. Most mixes include premixed fertilisers. Checkout the labels these days. They usually say that you should always wash your hands after using them! You can't beat good old "mother earth". Just make sure you collect it from a clean area. (Not where the cat or dog do their business!!!!)

that is a very nice pot :D, you got some great suggestions.

That looks so cool....now I want to make one for my lad

It really couldn't have been easier to do, I want to make lots of them now! Use recycled things like yoghurt and ice cream containers. A good pressie for a budgie loving friend too (in a nice pot) then they can keep doing it themselves.

That's fantastic! :D While picking grass for my birds today, I was wondering how this idea went.

I just had the loveliest idea for your extra special Aviary that your hubby built! You could have window boxes with budgie seed growing in them!

That is a really good idea!!!! I won't mention it to him today though........ He is on couch flicking between tennis & cricket on the TV and doesn't want to go back to work in the 38 degree temperatures predicted for tomorrow. I'll keep you posted though!!! :D
