Ivermectin?

Featured Replies

I am looking for a place (vet, budgie club etc.) in or around Adelaide that sells Ivermectin. One (possibly both) of my birds has scaly face and I need something to treat it with.

I don't want to have to pay a fortune for a vet to do it for me, just somewhere that will sell it to me so I can treat them myself. Could you help me find somewhere??

:)

Suggest you approach a budgerigar club and see if they sell it from their products table.

Thanks Kaz...

I'm not sure what budgie clubs are in SA though

I'll also try some vets in my area - just to see if they sell it, if some one has to do it for me I'll go to an avian vet.

:)

I am a member of NEBS and am about to join BSSA too (where Sunnie goes) .

There is a NEBS meeting on this Wednesday at the Kilburn Hall, Le Hunte St, Kilburn at 8pm. I will be there if you want to come along - they are very friendly. I dont know if they have Ivermectin on the trading table (because i haven't looked for it)

If you cant make it to the meeting i can have a look for you and if they have some i can post it to you :fear

What ever happened to the Reynella Budgie Club??? Just kidding that's where I grew up :D I don't think they had a budgie club. Best of luck finding a vet or club Budgiesaurus...

A few days ago (sorry for the late update) I rang the Glenside vet clinic to ask if they had Ivermectin. They said they probably could as they had seen my bird before but when they called back they said they couldn't sell it to me without an consultation appointment as they had seen the budgie for canker, not scaly face.... If I wanted them to do it for me I would have told them!

SO...

Thanks Liv for offering to look for some at the NEBS meeting  If you can find some I'll come and get it so you don't have to post it.

Good news so far, Tikal is improving without treatment. Sorry for the mistake above, it was not exactly scaly "face" as she had it on her legs.

I found some Ivermectin at a fodder store where they had 2 types, one for horses and one for livestock. Both were about $100 each, and I have no idea what the correct dosage for a budgie would be (you would have to dilute it wouldn't you?) so we didn't buy any. Talking to the staff of the store, they said I should not use Ivermectin for my bird unless it has an extreme case of scaly face (which it wasn't) as it is toxic and I would need to find the correct dose (even though I know a lot of people use it without problems). The woman even said that the Poultry Association used RP7 (lubricant oil) on chickens for mites. :) Anyway she had put me off buying the Ivermectin so I figured I would keep trying with olive oil or Vaseline or something.

They do get scaly mite on their legs that's the first place you notice it, It is when untreated it shows on the beak etc. oil will work but if you can get some Ivermectin it will cure it for sure plus it worms your birds too.

I have used it for years and have never had any problem :(

I didn't get any from the nebs meeting - they dont sell it as they dont want to get in trouble if anyone messes up the dose :(

I hope the oil treatment is working well :D
