January 20, 200916 yr Author a shark curry... that I have never tried... must give it a go when I am in Malaysia... a shark curry... that I have never tried... must give it a go when I am in Malaysia... I bet you have, you just don't know it was shark! im sure your right hills if you dont see it get filleted you cant be 100% sure what youve eaten .most of what used to be sold in fish n chip shops was shark now its a stinky asian catfish they call basa or pacific dory . if you saw where they farmed these fish you would never eat them ever again . JB i make a wiked cocunut milk curry shark from a recipe a tongan mate gave me , those islanders really know how to cook seafood and id go as far as to say its the best curry i have ever had . i am biased though ofcourse :yuck:
January 20, 200916 yr I've heard the stinky Asian catfish is high in minerals and essential oils like mercury and crude!

Tongans do not cook curry... they might call it curry but it is not curry... My mother in law (she's samoan) cooks something that she calls curry - you guessed it, not curry. :what: Did he tell you what the tongan name for the dish is? I might of had it before... What I will say about tongans is this... they know how to put on a feast... If every anyone is invited to a tongan party/cellebration make sure you go, you won't have to eat for 6 months :hap: Have you eaten raw fish in coconut yet? brez? the Samoans call it Oka. diced fish in with coconut and a couple of other things... January 21, 200916 yr Author sorry didnt mean to offend you jb , he insists its tongan curry , whatever that is ? he gives me a small satchel every now and then when i give him fish and tells me to make it last , bloody good stuff . definitely not normal curry like in asian cooking though . when i see him next i will ask him what the tradional name for the dish is , im sure your mother inlaw has cooked it for you yeah ive been to a couple of ungis ( think this is right ) where they cook all the food in the ground . you are right they sure now how to put on a feed . ive had the raw chunks in cocunut milk before , i think it may have had bananna in it too but not 100%
January 21, 200916 yr Just kidding about the offending me. The Samoan's don't like to admit it but Tongan food and Samoan food is VERY similar, they just give different names to the food. The first time I went to samoa I was driving down the road and I saw a sign saying "Indian Curry 10 Tala." I did a u turn and pulled up to the shop... asked for a chicken curry and paid the lady. She gave me my food and before I took it back to the car to eat I asked her if she did Korma, Vindaloo or Birriani, she just looked at me with this strange look and goes, "At the moment we only have chicken curry, but we will be trying to make beef ones next and we will see how that goes..." Before I went on that trip I was eating authentic Indian for the last 4 years at least 3 times a week... I took it home had a bite and gave it to the kids to eat... Least it wasn't wasted. I ate my girlfriends Aunties Samoan curry and that was much nicer. Next time you speak to your friend can you ask him what the name Taumei means? PM me what he says please. Happy Diving!
January 21, 200916 yr It is called a Hungi, Brez. Well that is what the Maori call it anyway, I don't know if it would be spelt or said differently in other cultures. Hungi food has a definite taste to it.
January 21, 200916 yr Samoans call it an Umu, Maoris call it a Hungi and Tongans... I can't remember... I knew what you meant though... Each culture does a slit variation on it... Samoans warm up rocks, then put the food on the hot rocks, then cover up the rocks and food with banana leaves. Maori's actually have it under the ground. I love the food from an umu.
