What To Do With A Newcomer?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I had 2 budgies, a cock and hen. Recently I came home one day to find a stray budgie on my verandah trying to eat some of the seed from the cage. He was very tired, almost couldnt fly and would hardly move when I approached him.

I managed to catch him easily and put him in a seperate cage with food and water. I since havnt located the owner (and dont expect to now). He has alot more energy now Ive given him food and water but he is very nervous and always looks ruffled in his feathers and is limping on one leg. Is there anything I can do to help him recover and what should I do before putting him in with the other birds?

Keep him quarantined from your birds for at least 30 days, that means his own cage, in a different room, because he was a stray on the safe side since you are planning on keeping him I would take him to an avian vet to check out his poops, see why he is limping, weigh him and overall general exam. This would be a good investment for your existing birds.

I agree - Quarantine!

There could be numerous reasons for my it is limping and is ruffled

..... If you are wanting to keep it ...Contact your local Avian vet and get him looked at .....

I agree with Neat and JB... get him checked out, espcially if you are keeping him. Its best for your existing birds, let alone finding out what his story is. Best of luck and keep us updated.

okay Thanks guys.

I get the idea that taking him to the vet is a good idea and I will. He is already quarantined so I will also keep him this way. I would like to keep him and give him a good home since he's lost his last.

Make sure you advertise that you have found him, or peruse the lost bird ads, because that bird could belong to a little child who absolutely loves it to pieces and is now in pieces themselves crying over it, you don't know. I know if someone found my bird and decided to keep it without advertising, I would be very upset.

I agree with SW on this part too. not even if it's a little child but I'm sure if an adult lost him and loves him as we all love our own they'd be heartbroken too. Unfortunatley, since he is injured he may have espaced or a dog or cat could have got it and injured it... or it could have been injured and a very WRONG person just set it loose not to worry about vet care instead of getting it the help it needed. I PRAY that's not the case. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Yes I have been searching for any ads for missing budgie and keeping my ears open for any word, but no such luck yet.

Here is a photo of the little guy. I named him Hercules
