Just browsing through the budgie safety forum made me remember an experience I had a few years back.

 

I bought one of those 'star wheel' toys that go on your budgie's perch, like this one:

 

 

My budgie LOVED it, but one day while he was playing with it he got his foot stuck in the lattice and couldn't pull it out. He panicked and starting jumping around and trying to fly away. I managed to cut the plastic and release his foot, but not before he got a nasty cut on his toe. I'm just glad I was in the room at the time and that he wasn't alone when it happened.

 

It also surprised me because I checked the toy before I bought it and the lattice didn't look big enough for a budgie to get stuck.

 

Has anybody else had a similar experience?

 

Are there many other toys that have been dangerous?

I would have bought that for Merlin because he loves lattice balls, I won't now, thank you for posting.

Leo loves them too so he was pretty upset when I took them away I'd rather him be safe though You're welcome I don't like the idea of anyone else's budgies getting hurt as well so I thought I'd say something.... we all know how inquisitive the little guys are! It's so easy for them to get into trouble

I never had a problem with that one - But the balls never last long with my birds .....

My birds have had them for over 10 years and they have never had a problem with them. Birds can hurt themselves on anything even perches. All toys have an element of danger to them.

I agree with Sailor, but as with anything keep an eye on them. My biggest problem with that toy was cleaning it often. It was an object of his affections, feeding and loving it often. I have used it for birds since then no worries.

Tilly has this "ferris wheel" as we call it.

It is also her favorite toy and I have had to replace it a few times as she has worn out the balls.

I have noticed the balls can be quite sharp when worn so i keep a watch on it.

Think i will remove it now she's no longer using it lol

i have never bought a toy fore ny birds in my life thay are quite happy withsticks and little trees and branches. but once i foune a big swing foro my birds it looked like this

but a lot longer and no bell and thay were not bells just mettle

I have had a few birds get wires from calcium bells and toys inserted between their leg and leg ring. Be careful of that also.

I cut the wires off the bells now and just leave them on the cage floor as a mineral block.

Gum nuts make the best toys.

It's funny how somebirds will have never ending issues with item and others will never have. I have that star bell thing and have used it for about 5 years untill it got told and I feared it would break an they might eat bits of plastic so I got rid of it, the same day i got another one and still use it in the avairy and do not have an issue.

I also have one and it is Charley's very favourite toy, he's never had a problem with it YET but I'll be sure to keep an extra eye out for any danger. He would be devastated if I took it out. I guess in some ways one can see danger in most of their toys and it pays to be aware of this. I have removed the odd toy when I realised he could get his head stuck in places!
