Posted December 30, 200816 yr Some of you may have noticed (if I'm still loved at all ) That I havn't been on much. As well as being away for a few days... but computer has crashed for the second time in two weeks. I'm using my sisters computer when I can... but just wanted to let you all know I'm still around and pop in when I can... and that I havn't forgotten you all. AND if anyone knows anyone who would like to give me a free apple laptop... I'd be more than greatfull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!            (Joke people.... my brother in law is either trying to fix mine or build me new one)
December 30, 200816 yr apple... there's your problem right there... just kidding, I think I'll be getting an apple next..
December 30, 200816 yr Maesie, I would have missed you if I knew you, but being so new, I know hardly anyone... very welll Actually, for the apple - go straight to Linux, it's an updated Apple OS and works far better on your old Windows machines. subliminal message: get rid of windows... install Linux!!!!!!!
December 30, 200816 yr hmmm might give it a go at some point, I'm just not computer savvy enough anymore..
December 30, 200816 yr You Linux people, always arguing that you beloved software is better than the big 2 - LOL!!!
December 30, 200816 yr ERRK Linix does my head in I am a VISTA girl..... linux and vista people under the one roof makes for interesting conversations
December 30, 200816 yr Actually my father has moved over to Linux (he's a big computer geek) and has had much less trouble with it. Vista is revolting!!!! I couldn't use word or excel because they'd changed it so much and I couldn't work it and ended up cracking it and asking hubby to reload an older version for me

I always knew you were a man of good taste!! As a Principal Unix Systems Adminstrator, I couldn't agree with you more.
December 30, 200816 yr But how do I get it? Do I just download it from the web or what? and then do I delete windows or what?? Should I ask this on some computer forum or what? Do you think I said or what to many times in this post... I think I did... Edited December 30, 200816 yr by JimmyBanks
December 30, 200816 yr You buy it JB, just like buying your Windows XP or Vista software. It's a full operating system used instead of Windows but which is almost the same to use (as in I didn't realise I was using it until dad told me it was Linux so if you can use windows you can use linux), you can probably buy it cheaper on ebay Edited December 30, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
December 30, 200816 yr Go to www.redhat.com and you can download Fedora 10 but its over 600Mg. It is actually open source so it is free. Redhat is basically the same O/S but you can buy support for it. This is what businesses would want to use. I have also used Ubuntu from www.ubuntu.com but had problems with drivers. Fedora is more widely used so I would get that. The big advantage is windows viruses are not able to attack Linux, so it makes a great web browser. EDIT: Oh By The Way if you get good at it, let me know, we're desperatley trying to hire another UNIX sys admin. It appears we're as rare as budgie teeth at the moment!! December 30, 200816 yr But why would you want to pay all that money for a system that is essentially the same as the one you've already got? I'm a windows gal!
December 30, 200816 yr Because it doesn't get errors all the time and also isn't susceptible to viruses
December 30, 200816 yr Because it doesn't get errors all the time and also isn't susceptible to viruses ........... ummmm durrr ,, i have no clue what you guys are on about ... im just happy i learnt emos :mallet:   :bluesbros: :ratty: :lol2: :dog: i love it
December 30, 200816 yr and also because it uses a lot less CPU to run as it doesn't have all those windows apps running in the background, like that annoying paperclip that tells you what to do! and also becasue it doesn't line Bill Gates pocket and creates some market competition and also because when there is an error, you can diagnose it and fix it rather than just rebooting your PC or reinstalling the app and hoping for the best. and also, as it is open source, it means you can write extra code for it to suit your needs and then share that with the broader community, just like many others have done, rather than Microsoft control it all and then sell it to you at a rediculous profit. and also... oh wait this is the budgie forum isn't it... sorry, I forgot where I was for a minute. EDIT: Oh wait there is one more - because its free!! Because it doesn't get errors all the time and also isn't susceptible to viruses ........... ummmm durrr ,, i have no clue what you guys are on about ... im just happy i learnt emos :mallet:   :bluesbros: :ratty: :lol2: :dog: i love it Haha, that's okay GB neither do I. After all that, as my PC is owned by my company, I'm forced to use their standard operating environment, which means I have to use windows too... My personal PC with Linux blew up (NOT DUE TO THE OERATING SYSTEM!!) and I haven't bothered replacing it yet. Edited December 30, 200816 yr by Hills
December 30, 200816 yr Author News just in.... my computer has gone to 'heaven'... and I'm buying a new one. Not an apple as it's not in my price range. I'm after as reasonably priced as possible, but not dodgie.... I have no idea when it comes to this stuff so my sister's boyfriend who's a computer expert is taking me shopping... then I'll do some internet research and then we'll get one. I don't understand all the technical stuff... I just want something that doesn't break down, has lots of memory and is FAST!!!!!! My main uses include internet... mainly BBC and other stuff, emails, and designing cards and stuff... Any brand pro's and cons are welcome...
December 31, 200816 yr I always stick with the brand names like HP or compaq (same company now) as my income depends on my computer. But Dell are cheaper and still good (other than they don't spend any money on R&D and just steal other companies ideas - oops, I'll save that for the other forum too ) If I were you I'd just go for the best deal on the fastest computer and make sure it has a good warrenty. Oh one more thing if you have school age children you might be able to get a government rebate if you say its for them, but check it out first. They might have to be laptops I think. December 31, 200816 yr I had an ex-student of mine make me one. It means that the what owuld have cost me $3000 in the shops I got for $1335.
December 31, 200816 yr Well my say is that if you find someone willing to give you any kind of good computer, Give Me His Name!!!!!!!
December 31, 200816 yr Apple - BSD UNIX, costs a fortune. HP or SUN UNIX now open source, (FREE) but requires specialised hardware as does Apple. (That's BAD) Windows - hardware is cheap, but uses a LOT of memory, and gets a lot of viruses and COST for each bit of software and because of that you need to use good anti-virus software plus use a lot of expensive programs like microsoft office. Use Linux: RED HAT, Fedora 10, OpenSUSE 11, CENTOS 4.5, Ubuntu (yuk). All the software is FREE, FREE Open OFFICE3.1, FREE Everything. Use VMS and run windows in a virtual machine or VMWARE or VirtualBox and do the same. Get Linux off the web and do an install which dual boots your PC so you can run them both if you are worried about losing your windows thing. Linux uses a lower level hardware, less memory and does not get viruses, it can't because users run in the user space and not the kernel space, unlike windows so there is no way to have your machines OS getting taken over. Then again your windows budgie software won't run unless you use WINE or para-virtualization. Still there are soooooooooooo many benefits. (it looks nicer too)
December 31, 200816 yr I've got an Acer laptop with Windows XP and I've had it for 2 years now. It has never crashed or got a virus (knocks wood). The only thing it has done is to somehow stop DVD movies from playing (DVD discs work fine, it stopped working after I watched 300 on it, maybe the Spartans destroyed my DVD drive so that I could never watch another movie . Selfish little fellas). I like Windows and PCs because I am a gamer and pretty much all games and components are made for Windows and PCs. What's wrong with giving money to Bill Gates? He supports many charities and without him and our good friends at Bungie there would be no Halo and my life would be less colourful. :baby: My mum managed to get a free computer by doing a computer course. You should check that out. They were up to date ones as well. Edited December 31, 200816 yr by Sailorwolf
