Posted December 30, 200816 yr My hubby has removed the kids from the house today while I undertake a mission to try and rid us of pantry moths. I started last night removng everything from the pantry and sorting through it. Anything which was clearly infested with moths already has been chucked, anything which does not seem to be infested has been put in the freezer(dry goods) to kill any unseen eggs or stacked on the bench to be washed before being put back (tin foods, etc) The cupboard will be cleaned with a vinegar solution then sprayed thouroughly with a surface spray (making sure to get it into the cracks) then left for a few hours before a wipe out of the flat surfaces (there should still be a residue left in the cracks which should take care of any eggs which hatch there). Then once cleaned or packed into snaplock bags inside plastic containers everything will be put back... Anyone have any other suggestions?
December 30, 200816 yr my nan used to have little open boxes of something in her pantry to keep the moths away... it wasn't moth balls or naphthalene like you put in your linen closet or anything. I think it was bicarb or something... will see if i can google it and get back to you!
December 30, 200816 yr Author Oh yeah should have said I've bought some pantry moth traps which seem to be really effective, I caught about 10 overnight after we'd already got rid of most of them!
December 30, 200816 yr Author did read somewher about using a mix of cornflour and something else to attract them, maybe that'swhat you nan used? Edited December 30, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
December 30, 200816 yr I use sticky fly papers...you can buy ones that are in a little roll and you pull them out to hang from ceilings etc. But they can also be used under shelves in pantrys....under shelf is the "ceiling" of another shelf. Cheaper than the pantry moth traps but the same thing. I also use the hanging sticky fly papers in my birdroom.
December 30, 200816 yr Author Touch wood I have never had them in my birdroom  Hopefully shouldn't need to get them again in the future as from now on all dry goods will be frozen prior to being put in the cupboard and anything that might attract moths will be packed into snaplock bags before storing too.
December 30, 200816 yr I put bay leaves in the pantry a couple to each shelf. I keep my flour in the fridge.
December 31, 200816 yr okay .. fill bag with hyssop, mint, rosemary for a efect on all moths ,clothes ,cabbage use lavender ,,sage ,santolina as well and wormwood and southernwood this mix all together will keep any moths away including the first three mentioned good luck ps to get rid of red spider mite coriander and lemmongrass you place it all in a pot of water slowly let the two steep and then when its finished drain the water from the herbs place in a spray bottle off you go you can bottle this i leave herbs in bottle of not used mixture
December 31, 200816 yr Author Well after all my scrubbing yesterday have only seen one moth today (which was swiftly dispatched;) ), if I can keep on top of new ones that hatch I might just manage to keep them away now.... I also managed to catch a mouse this morning n the mouse trap I bought yesterday so t's a promsing start all round for pest control!
December 31, 200816 yr Author The mice are a BIG problem, mainly in the house though not so much where the brds are (weird but probably due to the cages beng so secure). They took up residence in the cupboard where I store all my fabric for dressmaking and craft so had to take everythng out, most of it was okay but lots wasn't and had to be washed in napisan to make sure it was clean again. I found some evidence in the bottom of the pantry of them when I cleaned it so when I repacked I didn't put anything on the bottom shelf and put a loaded mousetrap facing the spot where they would run into the cupboard. It obviously worked because we got one! Hopefully we can catch a few more and it will be the end of that problem too
January 1, 200916 yr how do you use those? does the smell deter the mice? pretty much jimmy i would put a pot plant with both these in the general area the mice were hanging out but you can use them in a liquard form and just spray around the home thats efective personally for mice i would hunt down the nest pour petrol down make up some concret and then just before i pour the concret id ignight the hole ..... but thats in humain so ....herbs work :ratty:
January 1, 200916 yr i read that it is okay to leave flour in the freezer. ive done that for years. one less problem. snowy Touch wood I have never had them in my birdroom  Hopefully shouldn't need to get them again in the future as from now on all dry goods will be frozen prior to being put in the cupboard and anything that might attract moths will be packed into snaplock bags before storing too.
January 1, 200916 yr Author Yeah I just don't have the space to have it permanently in there. The mice were hanging out in my hall cupboard so I an't putting petrol in there
January 1, 200916 yr I put bay leaves in the pantry a couple to each shelf. I keep my flour in the fridge. I do this  And i use eucalyptus oil on cotton balls to keep mice away (and smells great )
January 1, 200916 yr Yeah I just don't have the space to have it permanently in there. The mice were hanging out in my hall cupboard so I an't putting petrol in there i was only joking on the petrol i dont like to harm anything not even mice we had mice once in my aviry where i usto live before i started to breed again mice were every where i had box traps all over the place we would catch them and then catch a train to the next town and let them go the kids loved it .. one day a really heaverly pregnant mummy had babys in the trap we didnt have the heart to let all the naked little things go in the next town so we got a fish tank the plan was to let them get hair then take the whole family of 8 to the next town but when i grabed mum by tail she turned around an bit me i droped her and she ran under the fridge we did everything to cocs her to her babys but nothing in 5 hours so we decided to feed them with a seringe all was going good my son had the job the all ate well but were getting cold so i warmed up a rice bag in the microwave and placed it under a tea towle and put them on top we put the lid back on when my son went to feed them he came back really upset with 8 little mice all steemed on the teatowle  ....woops what can i say i tryed
January 1, 200916 yr Author I don't like to either, hence the reason I sealed my aviary better to keep the mice out, that way they aren't a problem  When we move I have some special wire which I am keeping to enclose my aviaries which has very small holes so mice won't be able to get in at all
