Hi All :happy-dancing:. I'm new here (obviously :D). I'm Miranda, 25, from southeast Melbourne.

I have 2 large aviaries of budgies of all colours. We've had the aviaries for about 12 months. We started with 9 budgies, and ended up with more than 60. We've had to sell 30 already. The little devils breed year round, regardless of the weather. Right now I have 4 females sitting on a total of 11 babies. The most I've had from one clutch is 5 chicks. The poor mum was rather flustered and grumpy for a few weeks :happy-dancing:.

My males are very friendly- they'll gladly land on my hand for grass seed or lettuce.

I also have a tame blue Quaker named Munchie, and a tame Green Cheek Conure named JoJo. We adopted the conure last week. Both love to eat food straight off my dinner plate!

Here are some of my budgies.

Muffin and Scone:

Unnamed, but one of my favourite colours. She needs a new home though because she tries to take over everyone's nests.

Emerald:

Aussie, because of his colouring:

Boof. My husband named him because of his head. He'd never seen an English budgie before, hehehe.

Oompa Loompa, named by my (then) 4 year old daughter. She has been my most successful breeder. She's had 4 clutches this year and is a great-grandmother.

Stumpy was the only surviving baby from a nesting box that flooded in the rain a few months back. I hand reared him til he was almost fully weaned, but he unfortunately died suddenly one night. Poor little Stumpy :happy-dancing:.

Munchie, my blue Quaker:

JoJo the Green Cheek Conure:

Those are just some of my flock. I also have a pair of tiels, pairs of button quails, baby quails in an incubator, and 4 massive Japanese quails. I love my birdies!

So, Hi to all budgie lovers out there :happy-dancing:.

Photos Oversized - should be no larger then 480x640, for rules on posting you can go to the FAQ's > Welcome Center >How To Post Images, thank you for your cooperation, all images were turned to links you can repost them when they are resized :D)

Welcome to the forum, you have a beautiful assortment of "flock" members.

Hi and welcome....

I noticed you mention in two of your new posts that the budgies breed all year round and they have been breeding non stop.

I must tell you that the mere presence of a nesting box in an aviary will cause this to happen, and its very important that you only allow two clutches in a row and no more before a long well earned break from breeding. Removing the nesting boxes will allow them a holiday from breeding. Also having nesting boxes in an aviary of birds of all ages will encourage the youngsters ( under 12 months of age ) to breed before they should, so any under 12 months should NOT be in an aviary where there are nesting boxes. Hope this helps :D

Hi and Welcome :) But I do have to say I agree with Kaz.

Thanks for the warm welcome ^_^. And sorry about the picture issue. I did see the restrictions for image sizes, but on my Invision forum I have it set to resize any larger images automatically, and I thought yours might too. My apologies :).

It's funny, when I started out with my aviaries, I never actually intended to breed budgies. I previously had a large flight cage with 9 budgies, and shifted them into the aviary when I bought it. They paired up and started breeding about a month later. I thought it was fantastic cause I'd never seen babies before. I bought a second larger aviary and moved some into there plus a few bush budgies that came free with the aviary. They paired up and had babies too.

I had no idea they shouldn't breed til after 12 months old- I just kind of let them do what they wanted. They would have been around...maybe 10 months when they bred. Well at least now I know for future reference. Once the current clutches are out, I'll take the nesting boxes out.

Thanks :parrot: .

Welcome to the forums.

Also another thing that people don't seem to think about in colony breeding is that a lot of inbreeding goes on as well, producing chicks that are less genetically healthy than they could be. This on top of birds too young and too old breeding, non-stop breeding and fighting over nestboxes and territory can lead to death for a lot of birds.

Hey Munchie if you ever need some in the flesh type advice I'm a bored stay at home mum so I'd be happy to come for a stickie and chat budgies for a while (as ong as you don't mind my pet friendly kids tagging along). We are hoping to organise a get together for Melbourne members over the summer holidays so stay tuned for more info.

Hi Munchie, Welcome to the web site. :star:

Love your pictures. Especially the ones hanging off your shirt. I have a few of those in my avairy. They are so precious.

PS. Good to see you taking advise with open heart. There are some great people to learn from here.

Hi

Young budgies can neglect their chicks, attack the chicks, smash eggs, feather pluck. If the budgies are over a year old their is less chance of these things happening. When I colony bred my birds I had young birds breeding, and I lost alot of birds but I thought they all died of natural causes. But if I had of been a member of this forum at the time I would of stopped colony breeding instantly.
