Posted December 24, 200816 yr I was at a farmers market the other week and I bought some beetroots and bought them home, sliced them up and added them to the aviary, with mixed success. I put the 2 spare ones in the fridge. Yesterday I cleaned the aviary, no seed on the ground at all. Vacuumed it clean. Today I thought I would give the birds a treat, so they got the two remaining beetroot. This time I cut them in halves, and put them on skewers. They loved them. Now I have a messy aviary and some ghoulish looking birds. This is the demolished beetroot and messy floor. messy birds Beetroot will now become a mch more regular dietary component. They love spinach, corn and now beetroot, but not carrot remarkably

December 24, 200816 yr Yup thought so Kaz Thats why Ive always stayed away from it.. Ive NEVER seen Fresh beetroot for sale here .. Guess thats why Ive stayed away from it.. awww i wish i had some now My birds get beetroot regularly - except in the lead up to a show! I grow my own but supplement from the fruit and veg shop. They can also mess their masks up with corn, or with charcoal.
December 28, 200816 yr hahaha oh that's funny! Something to remember for Halloween!! If Alfred Hitchcock's movie bird was in colour... I am sure it would have looked like something along these lines!
December 28, 200816 yr Author LOL gorgeous!!!!! My my Dave that is a huge honey bell!! Not a honey bell, seed bell, but not honey It is as much for destroying as anything else. Like a toy. They will eat a bit, and demolish other bits. It is not their primary sounrce of seed, but it is a source.
December 28, 200816 yr Hi dave Is the budgie on the right a fallow? He has really gotten into the beetroot  They look really cool when they get into the mineral blocks and coloured veggies. I will have to try beetroot with my birds.
December 28, 200816 yr I love how the claws are covered to... I think you need to change its name to psycho...
December 28, 200816 yr I love how the claws are covered to... I think you need to change its name to psycho... This is not so much about the beetroot, or the seed bell, but things the birds enjoy doing. Many years ago there was an advertisement which stated "the best milk comes from contented cows". Well, I believe that we get the most out of our birds when they are doing what they enjoy and part of that is destroying and playing with things - if they pick up some nutrition along the way that's a bonus. That's why I put ti-tree branches in my flights, give them cuttlebone, bark, beetroot and other fruit and veg as well as ping pong balls and those practice golf balls with the little holes in them. I also like to have some swinging perches suspended so that they sway around. Oh, and I put rat wheels in too.
December 28, 200816 yr I've seen the video's of budgies in the rat wheel thing-a-me-jigs... They look like they have a tonne of fun
December 28, 200816 yr I've seen the video's of budgies in the rat wheel thing-a-me-jigs... They look like they have a tonne of fun  Yes, I have a friend with pet rats who buys budgie toys for them, and I buy rat toys for my budgies! At almost any time during daylight you can hear the squeak of the wheels going round with the budgies peddling madly. The wheels have never caused a problem except for once or twice a bird getting stuck between the wheel and the wire wall (I hang the wheels off the wire up high). Doesn't injure the birds and I suspect they get hung up a lot of times when I don't see and get themselves out of trouble by themselves. I've also seen bicycle wheels in flights with short stubs of dowel at intervals around the rim. The wheel rotates as the birds fly on and off the dowel. Don't quite know the mechanism at the hub so that it can turn but I imagine ball bearings are part of the picture.
December 28, 200816 yr  That is funny .. At least you can tell who liked it, who tried it and who dared not go near it

The natural perches provide entertainment in ripping off the bark. Callistemon and gum tree branches provide heaps of entertainment. Calcium blocks and cuttlefish. All these can provide nutrients, but they also provide entertainment, and that is good. As for Sebby, the messy Fallow - yes Pearce, she is a Fallow split recessive pied, she is the trouble maker in the aviary. there are times I wish she was covered in beetroot, but it has been blood. She may be small, but she is not to be messed with.
December 29, 200816 yr Attack of the vampire budgies!!! So what are seedbells stuck together with if not honey?
December 29, 200816 yr not sure - great question though - LOL Dave, I'm told it's wood glue, aquadhere. Supposedly goes through the birds' systems without problem but that's one reason I don't use seed bells. Jaz
December 29, 200816 yr Author It might be. I will have to search for the recipe on here for making seed bells as well. there has to be a better way than using a glue.
