Posted December 21, 200816 yr Hi All, I've been reading these boards the past few weeks as I knew I'd be getting a budgie for Christmas. I've had budgies before and have wanted one for a while, it's just been a matter of waiting till the time was right before bringing a new family member home. My new boy has yet to be given a name although I nearly called him 'Flatley' after Michael Flatley because he danced all the way home quite loudly in his little box! :laughter: There were many colourful and beautiful birds to choose from at the aviary but this little guy flew up to us as soon as we arrived and wasn't perturbed by my petting him through the cage. He kept returning to us while all the other birds were behaving like we were cats wanting to eat them. He is very curious but has been kinda quiet this afternoon...then again, after being in a huge aviary I'm sure it is all very new and (comparitively quiet) to him. He has had his wings clipped today as well (the breeder said I'd have more success training him this way but that they wings would grow back so he could fly which I want him to fly). I think he's beautiful.
December 21, 200816 yr Hello and welcome :laughter: He is a beautiful grey dominant pied Congratulations - Only 4 sleeps till Christmas
December 21, 200816 yr You have chosen well. As Liv says he is a lovely grey dominant pied boy and he looks just great. Sounds like he chose you too, which makes for a very good relationship. Congratulations and welcome to our forum :laughter:
December 21, 200816 yr He is absolutely gorgeous. I would go for a clearflight pied rather than a dominant as I can't see a band across his tummy
December 21, 200816 yr He's very cute! If you need help training him there is alot of information on the forums and in the FAQ's. Your bird is probably a little nervous because he is not familiar with his surroundings. Do you know what the breeder was feeding him before you got him? You may find he goes through a moult if the seed is a lot different to what he is used to... Welcome to the forum and I hope you find it friendly and fun :laughter:
December 21, 200816 yr He is absolutely gorgeous. I would go for a clearflight pied rather than a dominant as I can't see a band across his tummy There is no full front on photo showing his tummy
December 21, 200816 yr .. A Christmas pressie early .. that is just Ace .. .... WHAT A DOLL he is stunning .. Congrats on your new family member, and Welcome I look forward to getting to know "him" and you better Merry Christmas
December 21, 200816 yr Author aw...what a nice forum with welcoming members! Grey dominant pied vs clearflight....mmm...I'll try and get a full frontal photo of him tomorrow and post (not that grey vs clear means a lot to me right now but I'm learning fast!) I bought the seed and millet etc from the breeder as I figured they would choose the best for their birds so hopefully at least things will taste like 'home' to him even if they don't look and sound like home right now. As you said, there is a lot of great info on this site especially training, he kinda has me confused because he seems to know the first few steps of training - not afraid of people, happy to sit on your hand, doesn't flinch etc etc...I have a feeling this bird will be training ME rather than the other way around He's so lovely...even when he's sleeping.
December 21, 200816 yr Welcome to the forum. You are so lucky that he chose you. He is gorgeous. You must remember to post photos of him as he grows up. He is so cute.
December 21, 200816 yr just with the seed, if you decide you want to buy your seed from another source like a stock feed shop its good to blend it with the old seed for a little while so that they gradually get used to the new seed.
December 21, 200816 yr just with the seed, if you decide you want to buy your seed from another source like a stock feed shop its good to blend it with the old seed for a little while so that they gradually get used to the new seed. Very good advice JB
December 21, 200816 yr I learnt this because I changed straight over and then my birds went into a moult and I was like "oh no I bought sick birds, Probably french moulters knowing my luck... " but know it was the change in diet.
December 21, 200816 yr He is absolutely gorgeous. I would go for a clearflight pied rather than a dominant as I can't see a band across his tummy There is no full front on photo showing his tummy But the last one shows most of his tummy. I missread what you said and for a moment there thought my firewall was playing up again!
December 21, 200816 yr I think you may find that when he stands up straighter that there is a white band across him... If you look extremely closely you can just see the start of it above his right leg (his right not ours) stare at that point and gradually get closer to the screen you will see it eventually
December 21, 200816 yr congrats, and what a gorgeous head shot with the first picture you should enter this picture in our Competition Section, Under Budgie of the Month for January, Welcome.
December 22, 200816 yr The white on the tummy could be a reflection off the paper. But looking closely at his leg, it is white, giving him the appearance of wearing boxer shorts! So yes, I change to Dom pied Edited December 22, 200816 yr by Sailorwolf
December 22, 200816 yr Hello, welcome to the forum, and can I say... OH... MY... GOODNESS... that is one good looking bird... LUCKY YOU!!! :hap:
December 22, 200816 yr Author  at the boxer short comment. Who would think I'd get Mr Modesty as my budgie? hahaha Here he is in his glory: No name yet, thinking of Gill, Banjo or Pippin. Will probably go for Gill...have to see... He has perked up today and is boldly exploring his cage and throwing his seed everywhere. Very happy to sit on my finger and have me talk away but I resisted the urge to bring him out of the cage...will save that for tomorrow perhaps...don't want to rush him. He does do two things that are a little odd: 1) sits at the bottom of his cage for the odd nap (in addition to his perch). My other budgie (from years and years back) never used to nap in the bottom of the cage 2) sits in his feed tub, puts his head down into the corner and then goes *** for leather kicking the seek out the back behind him. Is he trying to give himself a bath? should I put a small plate of sand on the bottom of the cage? I really want to teach him to enjoy a very, very gently running tap...if I give him a plate to have a bath in will this put him off ever enjoying a tap? okay, I'm cheeky...I'm going to go search on the board for answers to the above as I know every new owner must ask the same things! Edited December 22, 200816 yr by SundayGirl
December 22, 200816 yr there is an old thread around with ~Una~'s birds having a bath under the tap... it looks gorgeous.
December 22, 200816 yr My babie budgies all sit in the seed dish and kick all the seed out, sometimes I think they do it just to annoy me.
December 22, 200816 yr Author ^^ thanks for the heads up about ~Una~'s birds...will go look... ^^ I can see why you think they do it to annoy you. I cleaned Mr Mr's cage this afternoon and it looked lovely...so he promptly 'refurbished' and turned it into budgie seed den again ...the little rotter
