Help! Chick Has Swollen Abdomen!

Featured Replies

Hi,

There is some photo's of my chick, it's abdomen is abnormally huge, it was a very pale colour when hatched and now in the last 24 seems to have a swollen abdomen.

Does anyone have any ideas about what it might be and if there's anything I can do to help it?

Very worried about this little one :( . If anyone can give me any advise it would be greatly apprechiated.

Thanks Budgielover13

Not really sure. It might have a birth defect of some sort which makes air and/or food enter the abdomen.

Doesnt look good, but these little guys are full of surprises so who knows what will happen. i have my fingers crossed for her

sorry can't help you on this one... I hope everything turns out good though.

I don't know, let us know what happens with the little one.

Have no clue what causes it but I had one that looked like that was thinking about what i should do but figured there was nothing the vet could do and must be a birth defect however could not bring myself to knock him on the head now he is a happy normal looking 5 week old, a little under weight but nothing I am worried about, maybe play it by ear or one of the other more experieced breeders might know.

Yeah thanks guys,

I thought it would probably been a wait and see situation. I will definately keep you informed of any changes.

Ouch AV knock him on the head ... :D

Not sure I would do it just like that, but I mean send him to birdy heaven as it really did look wrong but after a few days I decided he was getting feed and it did not seem to be causing him pain as far as I could see and there where no other signs of injury or issues so I thought that if it got worse I would have to discover a way to put him out of his misery, I use the phrase as an explain of the outcome not the acutal way I would go about it.

Is the swelling hard like it's filled with air? It could be bloat, or gastic dilatation-volvulus - vet needed!

Is the swelling soft? It could be food in the abdomen, swelling, inflammation, blood, fluids - vet needed!

Is it hard? It could be constipation - Vet needed!

At that age though will a vet be able to do much anyway? I mean I have no issue with taking a bird to the vet of course if it would help but if the vets going to look at it and say "well it looks like it's X, Y or Z but I can't treat it at this age so just wait and see" well it just seems like a waste of money that could be better spent.

Well for bloat and GDV (gastric dilatation-volvulus), they should be able to do something. In larger animals they pass a stomach tube, or use a syringe and needle, or perform surgery. I'm sure it can all be minimised to suit the size of a baby budgie. If it is constipation, the baby could be given an enema, or laxatives.

If it is inflammation from infection then possibly medicine etc.

Or if it is untreatable they can euthanise the baby.

Depends how ill you consider the baby
