Posted December 15, 200816 yr What does everyone do to there birds to get them ready for the breeding season? What does everyone do when they get some new birds? What do they put them on? What is there cycle and how long do they do it for? I am wanting to put all of my birds through it, but not sure what to do. I am wanting to ensure that all birds that i purchase in future i do this with. At present i purchase birds from good breeders, and buy pairs of them so i just put them straight into the breeding cabinet. Havent lost any birds, but have noticed a few pairs of late that i have purchased have gone into a moult after i got them home. the breeder told me it could be due to change in there diet. Advice please. Edited December 15, 200816 yr by Daz
December 15, 200816 yr I merged the your two posts in to one. I've PM'd you on what I do for breeding.. Good Nutrition and plenty of excercise. New birds are quarrenteed for 6 weeks before introducing them to the flight. They are monitor for any problems and given Probotic, vitamins and minerals and plenty of good food.
December 15, 200816 yr I always like to quarantine any new birds I purchase into an empty breeding cage for at least 4 weeks. Sometimes I use this time to pair a newbie up with an existing bird from my flock... taking the chance of maybe losing one bird to an infection. I just can't watch a single bird in a cage for that long, they go mad without company!!!! I also like to ask the seller when the last time they used ivermectin on the bird, as I like to give new birds a dose as a part of quarantiene. However too frequent dosing can give birds fits or even kill them. Of course when any of my birds are restricted to a small area like a breeding cage, I try to give them plenty of vegetables, grasses and eucalyptus leaves as well as iodine & calcium treats. The seed I use is from my local grain store, (Chord got me onto this idea), however I put 2 boxes of 2kg "Whistler" budgie seed and mix it into the 20 kg bag of budgie mix from the grain store, just to spice it up a bit. If you try and keep a good well balanced feeding regiume for your budgies and year round (not just during breeding season) then when you do decide to breed a pair (providing they are not molting) they will be ready to go anytime. Hope this helps..... Kazzy

December 15, 200816 yr If you go to the FAQ section of the forum and in the Instant Response option type in Quarantine Program you will get a great quarantine program, I use it for all my birds that I get (2 so far) As for getting birds into breeding condition... I have no idea there... As MB she's got my two hens at the moment and is wondering what she's going to have to do to get them into condition  And just to confirm a change of diet can cause a bird to go into moult... It is always good to try and slowly change their diet... Edited December 15, 200816 yr by JimmyBanks
