Posted December 13, 200816 yr http://mastecbase1.com/pht/indexhi.html Does anyone understand this?? Its absolute complete jibberish to me... Maybe I'm just overly tired...
December 13, 200816 yr Ah yes, good ol' DNA and genetics. If you are interested they teach it in first year papers at universities. You can do courses extramurally if you wish. As part of our course we had to take papers about the cell and its functions (including reproduction of the cell) and genetics. Fun times. It is actually really interesting stuff and for anyone keen on the genetics side of thing in breeding budgies I recommend taking a course in it. Extramural is the way to go if you don't have time to go to university. Not only is it informative, but you learn some really interesting things, like how they can make flies grow legs on their head instead of antennae. Why snakes have no legs and how certain mutations (like albinism) occur. It really brings your level of understanding dominant, recessive, co-dominant, linked, and sex-linked genes to a very indepth level. You get to learn how certain genes affect the body to produce the mutations that can be seen. Like how mutated genes produce mutated proteins that function differently to their proper intention, because of their different programming which caused a different shape. Fascinating stuff. I recommend doing a course in it or taking a few papers, it really changes your way of thinking.
December 13, 200816 yr Author glad you both liked it... I just can't grasp it... I agree it's very informative but I dunno... I haven't used my brain in years...
December 13, 200816 yr Once you get the hang of genetics it is all quite logical but I do think that most sites get carried away with tecnical explanations that make it very hard for a beginner to follow
December 13, 200816 yr I agree with Neville, I took a course about genetics in college and it was very basic and that is why I feel that I can grasp it.
December 13, 200816 yr In show we cut out some genetics because it's not relavant. eg a type 2 yellowface doesn't exist because it's a fault. Bleeding into the body colouring from the mask is not allowed. So you don't try to keep this type unless it is a bird.
December 13, 200816 yr So you don't try to keep this type unless it is a bird. So we have to get rid of yellowface type 2 dogs and cats? :budgiedance: Edited December 13, 200816 yr by Sailorwolf
December 15, 200816 yr So you don't try to keep this type unless it is a bird. So we have to get rid of yellowface type 2 dogs and cats? I know I should reread some of my posts ... I meant a good bird... um... still doesn't sound right :hap: forget the variety and look at the budgerigar, if it is a good shaped bird with good features, i'd keep it
December 15, 200816 yr Author :budgiedance: I get what you mean daz. I started to sit down and start to read that page again... I figure if I focus on small sections of it and just study those things day by day maybe then I'll see the big picture...

December 15, 200816 yr Author I had a guy tell me once that you do it with cards... blacks are dominant genes and reds are recessive genes... thats all I can remember about it though lol. So I don't know how you make figure out what the black ones do or the red ones...
December 15, 200816 yr just ask a lot of questions here when you see a mutation explained and you don't get it that is what I did and do and that helps me grasp the concept.
December 15, 200816 yr Maybe these article I wrote might help you to grasp the basics http://www.officialbarrieshuttbudgerigars....plegenetics.htm
December 16, 200816 yr Author wow you guys are everywhere... I've checked out Barries site. It is pretty good. Very informative I hadn't seen your article though  I'll have a read and get back to you  okay read it... Neville - Your a legend. Thanks mate. I've got that bookmarked.
