Posted December 10, 200816 yr Yesterday I was held up in town and it was past feeding time for the 3 birds that I am hand feeding so my 15 year old thought he was doing the right thing and decided that he would feed them to help me out. He has never done it before but thought that I've seen Mum do this heaps of time and it looks easy enough to crop feed. Well as you guessed it he put the crop needle in the wrong hole and the chick started to fill up with air and swell. This is when he decided to ring me (wish he had done that first , but I know that he was trying to help). I rushed the chick to the vet but he said nothing could be done and that euthanaisia was best for it. My son is devastated and has hardly come out of his room since, I don't blame him and as I said to him everybody learns from their mistakes no matter how big or small they are.
December 10, 200816 yr Oh how awful for him I can imagine how devestated he is, my son would be the same. *hugs* to you both
December 10, 200816 yr Your son shows he has HEART and the best of intentions.... hard lessons as you say. BUT please tell him it happens to the best of budgie breeders when they first learn to crop feed and its just a mistake. I hope he isnt beating himself up too much over this emotionally. He now needs something to make him smile again. I am guessing her thinks he has let you down as well as him feeling repsonsible for a death and costs to the family Big hugs from me :angel1:
December 10, 200816 yr Oh that poor sweet thing. I am sooo sorry to hear that. Tell him the the story of how I killed my best friend by stepping on him. Sometimes no matter how much we love them accidents happen.Love to you both!
December 10, 200816 yr Poor fellow, I know exactly how he feels! Many years ago I caused the death of one of our previous budgies by getting her out of the cage while our dog was inside. She flew straight to where the dog was lying and landed in between her front paws. The dog was taken by surprise and out of instinct smacked the poor budgie with her paw and broke her wing. The dog didn't mean to hurt the budgie, but none the less she passed away several days later even though i had taken her to an avian vet. I guess my message, as stated above, is it happens to all of us!
December 10, 200816 yr Sorry to hear this... as they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. He would now be best to find out the correct way to do it and then incourage him to do it again properly under supervision. It will help him get over it.

December 10, 200816 yr Moderator’s Message topic moved to a more suitable forum We must learn from our mistakes and not let them control us.
December 10, 200816 yr Oh Matey , Big hugs to you and your son.... I agree with Dazza on letting him learn the correct way.... Poor little guy -
December 10, 200816 yr Denise I feel so sorry for your son. Yes make sure he knows that it was an accident. When i did my first crop tubing, I was petrified of hurting the bird and having not done it before you just don't know. Tell him he is a good man for trying to help anyway and for the care he is showing.
December 10, 200816 yr Awww, hugs to you both mate  I hope he can move on from this and isn't scared from them forever... I hope it all works out in the end.
December 11, 200816 yr Author Sorry to hear this... as they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. He would now be best to find out the correct way to do it and then incourage him to do it again properly under supervision. It will help him get over it. Yes Daz, this is what I thought and what I have discussed with him and he wants to study the anatomy of the budgie before he would feel comfortable giving it another go. We have been to town today looking for a book with budgie anatomy in but can't find one anywhere. Thanks to everyone for their kinds thoughts and wishes regarding this matter. Dylan has cheered up a little as he got a phone call telling him that he has got a job for over the school holidays, good money too which he liked the sound of.
December 11, 200816 yr Glad to hear he is cheering up. Poor guy. Good luck finding a good book for him on the anatomy of a budgie. I'm sure there must be something out there. Hope he enjoys the new job too
December 11, 200816 yr Budgie anatomy may be harder to find. Try general bird anatomy. I wish I could give you my text books from uni! Sorry about the massive link. But towards the bottom this has a good comparason of digestive systems between birds. http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=...l%3Den%26sa%3DN
December 11, 200816 yr I hope it didn't put him off too much...poor thing he had the best of intentions!
