Posted December 7, 200816 yr A couple of weeks ago, we found a nest of 5 eggs in the corner on the floor of our small parrot aviary. We initially had a lot of problems with sickness etc with our scarlets and turqs and decided we would just keep what we had left as pretty birds next to our bbq area and not buy more and not breed. Well anyway, one little hen has had other ideas. We found the eggs, as I said, a couple of weeks ago, right near the door, so I have had to be careful to let the hen know when I am changing food or water, so she leaves her nest and doesnt fly out the door. We had asked people what we should do about the nest of eggs and have been told to do nothing, so we have just left them alone. I spent my weekend at Adam's this weekend and when I came home, started checking all the birds and this is what I found! I am really excited and hope that more of the eggs hatch This is mum on the eggs, not a great picture as I had to take it on the other side of the aviary through the wire. This is Boss, he's dad And their first baby!
December 7, 200816 yr very cute!! They are great I saw some of them at the pet shop in Melton today and didn't know what they were....
December 7, 200816 yr Author Thanks Jimmy Scarlet chested parrots is what they are. They cross breed with Turqs which we have in there also (only a turq cock, as we lost the hen some time ago), but that was another reason we didnt put nest boxes in to encourage them to breed. But I guess where there's a will there's a way with some broody hens lol
December 7, 200816 yr wow so they cross breed? Interesting... are the babies still called scarlets then?? or turq's?? will the babies be mules (i'm to tired to think of the right word) or can they have babies too?
December 7, 200816 yr Author I am not sure what they are called when they cross breed, and yes, the cross breeds can also breed as far as I am aware. It was something we didnt want to encourage though. I did see Boss with the hen a few weeks ago and he is the one who has been flying down to feed her, so I can only assume and hope that he is the father of the babies.
December 8, 200816 yr Fluffy bum!!!! They look gorgeous! I want fluffy chicks again!!! Bring on the lovebirds
December 9, 200816 yr Author I havent checked since taking the pics, cause I like to leave her alone, being so exposed on the floor of the aviary, but every day I go out and I can see her tail poking out under the aviary, so I know she is still sitting. I plan to have another look tonight though, as they will need more seed today or tomorrow, so I will do it today Out of curiousity, do you think the grey egg is rotten or fertile? I guess it could possibly be near to hatching *shrug*
December 9, 200816 yr Sometimes nature has different plans for us! WOW and congrats I hope all the babies are healthy and hatch for you.
December 9, 200816 yr Author Updated pics today We now have three babies I took a picture of the outside of the aviary to give an idea of where she is nesting, literally right in the corner where the door is. I had to be careful filling up seed and changing water, dad was VERY flighty and so was mum a bit. They are such timid natured birds, I think their bravery comes out when it comes to protecting their babies though! Mum's tail, in usual position poking out under the aviary door. Three babies - I think number three was hatched today
December 9, 200816 yr Oh you're so lucky!!! Looks like one to go yeah, we're trying as always Pie, only had 2 babies ever before Hybrids
December 9, 200816 yr Congrats!? Is that the grey egg that is left? not left on the picture but left to hatch
December 9, 200816 yr Should be another white one too Jimmy But yeah the grey egg is left also, but I think it's dead Jim hahaha!
December 9, 200816 yr Author Yeah, I think they are on top of the last egg, it was hard to take pics quickly, I put the camera on macro and looked at it from a distance and just took two quick snaps and as you can see in the picture, its not easy to make tail or head of those little fluffies lol I agree with Kaz and Lib that the grey egg is probably DIS.
December 16, 200816 yr Author Well bad news on the scarlets  We had a lot of heavy rain on Friday and being that the hen was nesting right in the front corner of the aviary, water seeped under and the babies became wet, but I did realise until Saturday afternoon. Two were gone when I discovered and the third wasnt far behind  Number four is currently being fostered by a budgie mum, so far so good. I feel like whenever I get excited about something, I jinx it and it falls down. So I am hopeful Suki will continue to feed the baby for at least another week and then I am off to get some hand rearing lessons from a friend.
December 16, 200816 yr That's unfortunate Sunny. Well I hope the last two pull through okay. Suki is a nice name. Avatar fan?
December 16, 200816 yr Author Thanks JB and SW. Baby 3 died but baby 4 is doing well so far with Suki. I dont know where I got the name from SW, I was looking up Zen/Hindu/Japanese type "at peace" names and found that name somewhere. Her partner's name is Nirvana, so I wanted a peaceful, pretty name for such a pretty girl
