New Budgie Breathing Problems

Featured Replies

Posted

Hi. I've got a new budgie, had him for about a month now. He is breathing with his beak open nearly all the time. He seems happy and otherwise healthy, he eats, drinks, poops and makes alot of noise :) Can anyone tell me what his problem might be?

Sorry if this question has already been asked, I'm a bit new to all this :)

Thanks!

If you listen closely does he make a clicking sound with his breathing. Does he have stained feathers above his nostrils ?

Hello and welcome.

Sounds like your budgie has an illness.

Budgies will breath with their beak open in hot weather or when under stress, but in your case it sounds like there is an underlying issue.

Could be airsac mites, respiratory infection or psittacosis - just to name a few.

An Avian vet will be needed to diagnose your budgies symptoms.

There is a faint clicking sound, but no stained feathers. I just looked at him and he wasn't doing it but he is now.

Okay, thankyou!

The clicking sounds can be associated with symptoms of air sac mites. he will need a vet diagnosis and treatment.

I agree - sounds like air sac mites to me too.

They are treatable, but needs to be treated soon as the mites suck blood and birds can go down hill fast :)

Clicking sounds indicate any respiratory infection or problem, not just air sac mites. The sound comes from fluids in the respiratory system, most probably from inflammation.

Thats why I said can be associated with and didnt say is just to do with air sac mites :)

However the impression that only air sac mites were indicated was given by the direction of the discussion. I was just clarifying that the clinical sign of clicking can be due to other things.

Let's not get into semantics.

The consensus of opinion is to get a veterinary check up, anyway :)

I agree needs vet attention -

Most birds that show signs of illness have more then one problem associated with it

I was going to say it was nervousness because many new budgies if very fearful if you look at them or try to talk to them can start to pant. BUT an avian vet check up is in order since there are other symptoms with this behavior. Keep us updated and let us know how the appointment goes.
