November 27, 200816 yr My pair of budgies had their first babies not that long ago after the female was meant to be to young to breed. She had been killing off the babies that were still in eggs from my other pair of budgies and than had her own .....kicked the baby one out at 4 weeks and went and had more babies she had 4 first litter ( clutch ) then 5 ( second clutch ) and she has kicked the last one out just a few weeks ago and has gone and breeding again ( third clutch ) so has the pair she kept killing the babies from had her first baby Friday and now she has 3 but one sadly past away the day hatched at the same time as this has been happening my cockatiels had babies and my quails had 7 babies today. Just looking at your first post again. The hen was supposed to be too young but she has been put in an aviary with nesting boxes and that caused her to have babies ( so the fact that she has had babies now makes you think she actually wasnt too young, but most likely she still is ) . You are now ALLOWING HER to have a third clutch of babies. And her sister is also having clutch after clutch ? Or at very least re-laying the eggs her sister broke. What diet are the birds on ? What additional supplements are they on ....i.e. calcium etc. How many birds of each kind are in your aviary ? How old are all the birds, including the previous babies ? How many nestboxes are in the aviary ? How close are the nestboxes to each other ? Can you show a photo of the whole aviary and nestboxes ? These questions are so we can help you have your birds healthier and happier and your aviary under more control than it is now. Please try and answer the questions so we can help, as so far you skip the hard questions or ones you dont like. You are never too old or too young to learn from people who know more than you do and people who are trying to help you. Please do not be so defensive....we are trying to help you. November 27, 200816 yr Author She is defently not to young when i got her she was in with the babys at the pet shop and they were saying that she was younger than what she really was they were saying other budgies that had been there for about a year were still babys they didn't know much about the birds we had seen her at the shop for quite a few months before i bought her she will quiet over 12 months now her sister did not lay the eggs over and over and now her sister is breeding she has stoped attacking the eggs so her sister has had babys now. I think the reason why she was killing the eggs at the start was because she wanted one of my other males that had paired up with her sister at the start. The vet that i work at knows about all of my birds and has seen them and he says they are all healthy, happy and there is nothing wrong with them and my breeding setup is working and great. What diet are the birds on ? Trill budgie seed/ got cockatiel mix in there aswell and they get lots of greens and that grass seed What additional supplements are they on ....i.e. calcium etc. There is this stuff that we put in the water can't remember what it is called, cuttlefish and shellgrit How many birds of each kind are in your aviary ? mostly budgies, 3 cockatiels, at the moment 9 quails, 1 pigeon How old are all the birds, including the previous babies ? The youngst is only born today the oldest is about 3 years old and the ages all range How many nestboxes are in the aviary ? about 5 and they also have a big rabbit iglo on the bottom that the cockatiels have had bubs in How close are the nestboxes to each other ? There is the iglo and a box ontop of that and the rest hang of the wallgoing around the edges of the avairy Can you show a photo of the whole aviary and nestboxes ? When the camera will work and not die i know the avairy is one of the d&l classic
November 27, 200816 yr I think the reason why she was killing the eggs at the start was because she wanted one of my other males that had paired up with her sister at the start. Doesn't work like that... Sadly the only reason she would have broken the eggs is because she wants the box. Some hens can be so aggressive when it comes to nest boxes that they will kill growing chicks and even flight adults to the death over a nesting site. I have had a few hens like this and when i was colony breeding i removed them from the aviary into the non breeding aviary and that stopped the problems.
November 27, 200816 yr Author because she is really bossy and was .trying to control the other birds I still think the reason why she was killing the eggs at the start was because she wanted one of my other males that had paired up with her sister at the start. She has never killed a hatched baby of a older bird

She has never killed a hatched baby of a older bird You are wrong about that. Hen destroy eggs to take over a nestbox...pure and simple. Thats why they do it...its part of them cleaning out that nestbox for themselves.
November 27, 200816 yr Author She has always been like that she will still chase other budgies out of the boxes she would still have her own box and go into other boxes and kill them from her sister she really picks on her cause her sister is really quiet and she isn't
November 27, 200816 yr She has always been like that she will still chase other budgies out of the boxes she would still have her own box and go into other boxes and kill them from her sister she really picks on her cause her sister is really quiet and she isn't Then that budgie must be removed from a breeding aviary. ALSO as stated you are allowing her repeated clutches. She is onto her third clutch and she will kill herself breeding herself to death. Three clutches in a row is too much for most birds, especially with the territorial stress in that aviary. She needs a holiday OUT of the aviary and not breed for at least 6 months or more. November 27, 200816 yr Petbreeder ...... You seem to have all the answers and require no help. I will remember that next time you have a problem.
November 27, 200816 yr Hi Petbreeder, I just noticed that you are quite young yourself. It must be tricky trying to work out how to do the best for the budgies you love. Budgies are so lovely to look at and play with, but they are also very fragile little things too aren't they? You must be feeling quite distressed about the situation you and yours birds are in. I know that the people in this forum may seem like they are being bossy, but they are worried about your budgies, just as much as you are. Are you a member of a club? I'm thinking of joining the Box Hill one, just to learn all the little bits and pieces that aren't in the books. What do you think? Chrisg

Chrisg I haven't had a problem with trying to work out how to do it i have lived around heaps of animals all my life and am also a mouse and guinea pig breeder and have breed fish, hermit crabs, helped my bro with rats and i have done rabbits i also work at a vet with losts of animals so am always exposed to them. I don't really find it desressing with them i go go with them. I can not really find a club to join i don't live to far from the box hill one so may look into that.
