Posted November 17, 200816 yr I now realise that the two budgies of mine that died, both were visibly violet. One was quite clear, the other was a violet cobalt. They were my only violets, and the only two birds to die, within a week of each other (from different breeders). I just bought a new white on the weekend that appears to be molting to male (because I have 2 white females), but after a closer examination that night I found a violet patch on his rump, covered by his wings when not in flight! He seems to have a balance problem too :/ *ponders*...
November 17, 200816 yr My aviary is nearly all violets and i have not experienced any weakness with them Might just be a fluke.
November 17, 200816 yr Author Probably... I really loved Crumbles and I wanted to breed her. Just out of interest sake, what kind of mutation is a pure white (non-albino) bird, and a pure white with a violet rump patch?
November 17, 200816 yr Would have more to do with where you are buying them, how they have been bred and kept, their health and quarantine, prior to your place and since and how much stress they have been under moving from previous home to yours and the settling in period. Nothing to do with colour. Probably... I really loved Crumbles and I wanted to breed her.Just out of interest sake, what kind of mutation is a pure white (non-albino) bird, and a pure white with a violet rump patch?Could be anything but photos help
November 17, 200816 yr I would have to agree with the others. I have violets too They aren't a weak variety just a smaller one
November 17, 200816 yr Author I didn't honestly think there would be, but the thought occurred to me when I was reading about mutations and realised that Saphyre was a violet cobalt. I'd had both birds for 6 months and they came from different places. And of course this new bird has violet on him too. I'll try and get a photo of him soon.
November 17, 200816 yr What colour are his eyes? with out a photo i will take a guess at a doubble factor dom pie does he have spots or just the violet cheek patches if no spots i say dom and if he is under 5 months he may darken to show more violet near face either that or a recesive pie clear wing really do need picture cause thats just guess from my own stock
November 17, 200816 yr Author He's got black eyes, only about 4 months old, no black dots, cheek patches are silver.I have one albino and one white which I am guessing is a white DF spangle, but I am a total n00b to genetics, so my guess goes with a grain of salt and black pepper. http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm164/k...11172008119.jpg http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm164/k...11172008120.jpg http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm164/k...11172008117.jpg http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm164/k...11172008114.jpg Edited November 17, 200816 yr by ShadowGhost
November 17, 200816 yr Interesting topic, Merlin is a violet and he is just fine, Pretty was a recessive pied and passed within 2 years, I believe breeding has a lot to do with weak birds but not the particular color but they have shown that certain mutations are smaller then others.
November 18, 200816 yr Author Sorry, I'll try again. I had lots of wierd problems with the forum last night. Edited November 18, 200816 yr by **Liv** Changed image links to images :)
November 18, 200816 yr I am really unsure and just posting this to be corrected if need be I will say double factor cobalt spangle with diffusion on the rump, but this is really a stab in the dark
November 18, 200816 yr I have no idea on the mutation but 'he' looks more like a 'she' to me and not very old? Edited November 18, 200816 yr by Denise
November 18, 200816 yr Author Males can have iris rings too... or am I mistaken? Edited November 18, 200816 yr by ShadowGhost
November 18, 200816 yr Males can have iris rings too... or am I mistaken? That has nothing to do with it re sex of bird. I am asking does this bird have iris rings so I can work out what it is
November 18, 200816 yr No it doesn't. I think its only 4 months old. I am thinking it is a recessive pied with little to no markings. I guess with time we will see if iris rings develop or not PS I have a recessive chick in a nest thats feathering up all yellow with only a hint of colour on its rump...like yours.
November 18, 200816 yr Author Interesting. Does recessive mean that it carries the pied gene but it's being masked by something else?
November 18, 200816 yr Yep It means that it can carry a recessive gene without showing it. in your case though it is showing the gene Edited November 18, 200816 yr by **Liv**
November 18, 200816 yr Author okay I've been reading up on mutations and genetics but I'm far from understanding any of it Wouldn't a recessive pied that showing it .... not be recessive, but just pied? Edited November 18, 200816 yr by ShadowGhost
November 18, 200816 yr It could be a double factor dominant pied if it gets iris rings Have a lookie at this ---> Pieds Edited November 18, 200816 yr by **Liv**
November 18, 200816 yr okay I've been reading up on mutations and genetics but I'm far from understanding any of it Wouldn't a recessive pied that showing it .... not be recessive, but just pied? You are getting confused over the word recessive where recessive pieds are concerned. There are recessive genes but there are also recessive pieds. Recessive pieds are also known as danish pieds if that helps.
