Posted November 16, 200816 yr I have a hen who I have let lay a second clutch because she only raised 2 chicks in the first clutch - she laid 4 eggs, 1 DIS and the other clear. This will be her 3rd clutch since I've had her (not in succession) and she has only ever laid 4 eggs in each clutch. Now to my problem this time she has laid 9 eggs and looks to be going to lay more and all are fertile that I've been able to candle so far. The first is due to hatch in 2 days. How many is to many for her to raise. I only have 2 other hens on eggs and young chicks at the minute - 1 has 5 chicks and the other has 3 chicks hatched and 3 more fertile eggs to go. Could I take the first couple that hatch and foster them to the other hens I have sitting? Edited November 16, 200816 yr by Denise
November 16, 200816 yr I have a hen who laid 10 eggs. I let her raise 7 and fostered the other 3. The main thing with fostering chicks is to give them to a hen that has chicks of a similar age
November 16, 200816 yr Author Thanks, I will take the first 2 that hatch this week and foster them to my other hen whose last 2 eggs are due to hatch at the same time. They are both good parents so it shouldn't be a problem hopefully. Best part is that I will easily be able to tell the chicks apart as one pair is Lutino and Green Opaline and the other pair are Cobalt Normal and Albino.
November 16, 200816 yr Unless you have the same roblem as me and it turns out both your green series are split for blue! Out of my green/green show pair I got two blues and out of my green/blue pied pair I got a blue, the only pair that gave me a green was my crested pair :bump:

November 17, 200816 yr Lol, it took my greens 4 clutches to start producing blues, it was a shock when they finally arrived
November 17, 200816 yr There are always hidden surprises. Like my pair didn't produce opalines or violets or white series in the first clutch and then in the second clutch I got a white series and 2 opalines and 1 violet and these are all recessive genes! It would pay to mark the eggs with a pencil or water based nontoxic pen. Edited November 17, 200816 yr by Sailorwolf
