How did that happen? I feel sorry for your blind one, have you been in touch with the breeder again? Its just bad luck and a bad selection for you from the breeder. It'll sort itself out, sorry to hear it I hope things look up for you soon.

Isnt this just a typical day, week, month for a budgie breeder :( For all those that think its easy....this is normal and what happens. Everytime you get your hopes up or get excited about something...this kind of thing happens. I DO know what you mean....same sorts of things here too

;)

AV so sorry to hear this news :( Can I ask how they know the Lacewing is blind? Also, from the picture it really still looks like a male since the cere is pink.

I can answer this one for you Elly :( I was in AV's aviary today about to catch another bird and we were discussing the ino. It flew up onto the wire and I notice it's eyes seemed cloudy, on closer inspection both eyes have what look like cataracts. The bird is capable of flying but simply doesn't and very poor eyesight would certainly explain this behaviour. As to it's sex it does have faint white rings around it's nostrils wich you can't see in that photo, hence the fact that we are now questioning it's sex ;)

Ignore the nasal rings. If the cere hasnt turned brown at an age and stage of being in breeding condition for a hen then it is a cock.

Thanks guys. It just seems I am not having the best of luck.

As for the blind one first I put him/her in a cage with another Budgie and he/she showed no intrest in the hen then he/she started to molt and has been in molt since then.

He/she is a great looking Budgie and I think would make someone a really pretty pet but I think I might need to find a home for him/her as I don't think the avairy is the right environment for him.

As for the broken neck I have had two do this, one was a hen and one was the grey cock. I was a bit annoyed about this but both of them did it while in the bird room, I thought I might have mice but can't find any evidence of them and have put down bait and traps but caught nothing so no clue what happened. :(

I guess it's just hard when you go out and purchase some base stock to start breeding from and they all end up with issues or dead it's really kind of sad.

Also this the shemale, when I purchased it there was no evidence of he/she being blind in fact the first month that I had it out of quarrantine it flew around the avairy as if nothing was wrong so this has happened in the past few months grrrrrr

So sorry to hear you had such a bad week ;)

I agree its a roller coaster ride in the budgie breeding world. I had 4 birds die in a week from all different causes too once- it makes you want to give it all away until you start to see those little chicks growing strong and healthy :(

I had this trouble when I bought breeding age hens last year from a breeder (now I know why they were selling them :)

If I buy now I only buy babies and wait until they are old enough and breed from them. I have had a really good outcome this season from breeding last years babies (touch wood)

Yeah the albino looks like a cock to me. Even if he was capable of breeding you probably shouldn't, if he has gone prematurely blind. Not a good genetic trait to pass on. And he probably wasn't interested in breeding because he couldn't see the girls.

Would the blindness be genetic? Maybe its a nematode/tapeworm thing, they can cause blindness..?

Lots of things can cause blindness. But without knowing the cause it is probably best not to breed with them anyway, as they probably can't, because they can't see.

Nematodes and cestodes don't really tend to cause blindness. It is very rare and only usually if it ends up in the wrong host and that tends to be humans.

I would say that because he is an albino then he is more predisposed to cataracts anyway as they cannot filter light from their eyes like normal eyed animals can.

Sorry to hear of all your bad luck with new birds AV :hap:

This happens I think, with all birds in general. We just recently bought a replacement crimson wing hen for our other hen that died and I introduced her into the aviary in the afternoon and checked on her several times the next morning to see how she was settling and everything seemed fine. Then I was about to hang washing and thought I would just duck around quickly again to see how she was and I found her on the floor of the aviary with a broken neck :)

These kinds of things really suck, but with birds being such delicate creatures, I guess we can only do the best we can and keep on loving them the way we do.

Crossing my fingers for you for better luck coming your way soon :D

Blindness can occur in a bird if it has had an aviary accident and hit into a wall. It has happened to us. You said it appeared fine at first and may have become blind after...perhaps this is what happened to yours ?

Well I lost Cloud today. I thought that might happen but then i thought that the crop feed that MB did might have helped him but no help :D

I just wish i picked up his weight loss earlier and could have stopped him from spending all his time in the breeding box with the hen.

Poor baby :D We did everything we could, it's so hard to tell sometimes that they are going downhill until it's almost too late.
