Posted November 4, 200816 yr I've read the info in the FAQs about cages and I think I've found the right cage for us. It ticks all of the boxes as far as your recommendations, good size (about 60x45x45-ish) flat roof, black bars, right bar spacing, has its own stand, perches from front to back and it also looks well made, but it has an opening roof. Is that going to be suitable/useful. What is the purpose of an opening roof? I like the idea of a play gym on top, will an opening roof affect that?
November 4, 200816 yr Size is perfect. Open roof is more for tiels and parrots than anything. Some open roof designs have caused accidents also.
November 4, 200816 yr Sounds good... can we see it???? If you don't want to use the open top, just use black cable ties to shut it permanently Edited November 4, 200816 yr by maesie
November 4, 200816 yr Author Thats a good idea  Its at our local pet shop, so I'll definitely post a picture of it before buying it. I also want to re-check the spacing again. I don't think it was above 1/2 an inch but it was up there. I assume from Kaz's post it is probably designed for a slightly larger bird.  There are slightly cheaper cages in town, but though I should support our local store.  Cheers
November 4, 200816 yr Author I just phoned the shop and the bar spacing is 1.5cm, which would be too big, wouldn't it? Â They said it would be perfect for budgies, which makes me think they just want to get rid of it. If they're going to treat me like that, then I'll take my custom elsewhere. Pet shops do have a tendancy to try and sell they stock they have!!!

They dont know you have hundreds of budgie nuts here to advise you
November 4, 200816 yr Author and thank goodness I do!! Â The cages in town were about the same size for around the same price, they just didn't look quite as solidly built. Â I actually quite like this one, but discounted it after reading the FAQs as its too high and not wide enough, nor does it have the flat roof, but thought it would look like a nice piece of furniture in the entry lobby where he will be located when inside. November 4, 200816 yr I am in Adelaide and bought a 60(wide) x 45(deep) x 45(tall) black cage on stand with 1cm spacing and no open roof from a store in the city. If you would like the details of where I bought it, just PM me  Â This is my post with photos of the cage. I hope the link works, I haven't done that before. November 4, 200816 yr Author Thanks Neats, I couldn't see any details about postage on that site. I'll shoot them an email. Â I saw that other cage on Dealsdirect, but it looks as if it only comes in white. I'd prefer a black cage as white seems to make it harder to see the birds.

November 5, 200816 yr Author I went into Tam's shop today and they only had one cage left and I couldn't see a matching stand, although I didn't ask, they might have had more out the back. Â But... they did have another cage and matching stand that caught my eye. It was basically the same size at the bottom, but had an arched top. (one big arch and 2 smaller arches each side). Â Now I know that top area is useless to a budgie (and I know I'm focusing too much on the appearance of the cage ) but wouldn't that be just as good for the budgie as a rectangle cage given that it has the same flight area at the bottom of the cage? As I said before, I'd still like the cage to be an attractive piece of furniture, but without sacrificing and of the budgie's creature comforts. Or should I just pull my head in and get a plain rectangle cage and stop being so petty )

Better wait for all the expert opinions, though as I am new and they might know something that I dont? Cheers and good luck, Trish.
November 5, 200816 yr Author Haha, I'm exactly the same way, however as we're going to wait for a budgie from a breeder, we're not in that much of a hurry to get the cage.
November 5, 200816 yr In my opinion... as long as the width AND length are the same... and the height isn't compromised in anyway due to the arches... it may be okay. I'd have to see it though... also, make sure there are no parts where the bars join and get closer as they can get their toes caught...
November 5, 200816 yr with bird cages its all about flight sapce If the pretty cage has the same flight space as the "boring" cage, then there is nothing wrong with getting the pretty one  The boring cages are great for putting play gyms on the top
