Posted November 1, 200816 yr My husband chose this pair to breed. Mum is a Yellowface blue spangle and the Dad is a light green greywing. The have 3 chicks. Mum and Dad Chick 1 Chick 2 Chick 3 Edited November 1, 200816 yr by Denise
November 1, 200816 yr I'm not much of a genetics whizz lol... but unless the dad is split for blue they'll probably all be green. At the very least you can tell already that they're all either green or yellowface, because they have all come through with yellow not white. I can't really tell what they are because I have never had greywings before. So even though the first one looks like a spangle to me, I don't actually know what greywings look like so I don't know if it could be one. I hope that is an old photo of the mum! Because that hen looks very young in the picture. They are both very beautiful birds though and i look forward to seeing the babies when they're all feathered up Edited November 1, 200816 yr by krosp
November 1, 200816 yr From that pair you would expect to get: 50% spangles. All green series unless the cock is split for blue with 50% being grey green. No greywings unless the hen is split for greywing. It will be interesting to see how they turn out
November 6, 200816 yr Author Oldest chick looks to be going to turn out like the Dad. Will take some more pictures in a couple of days when there is a bit more color.
November 6, 200816 yr Ummm... is that a black ring on your cocks leg??? He doesn't look 6 years old so I'm guessing he is an 08 bird?
November 6, 200816 yr Author Ummm... is that a black ring on your cocks leg??? He doesn't look 6 years old so I'm guessing he is an 08 bird? Not quite - I don't breed birds under 12 months. The cock is about 14 months, he has a split slate colored ring on his leg as do most of my birds for my records.
November 6, 200816 yr Good to hear denise. just caught my eye thats all... Looking forward to seeing how your birds turn out.
November 6, 200816 yr mums stunning. Very much like a strange chicklet in your other nest.... no egg swapping??
November 6, 200816 yr From that pair you would expect to get: 50% spangles. All green series unless the cock is split for blue with 50% being grey green. No greywings unless the hen is split for greywing. It will be interesting to see how they turn out the other 50% will be normals in case you were wondering , I agree it will be interesting to see how they feather up. Isn't there a way to tell a spangle early by it's tail feathers?
November 6, 200816 yr yep the centre 2 feathers will be lighter- yellow on a green bird instead of dark, white on a blue bird
November 6, 200816 yr yep the centre 2 feathers will be lighter- yellow on a green bird instead of dark, white on a blue bird Thank you pie, I knew it was something like that but I didn't remember. So now you know what to look for in their tail feathers or if you post a picture of the babies make sure you show their tail feathers too because our experts can pick it out for you quickly. .
November 10, 200816 yr Author mums stunning. Very much like a strange chicklet in your other nest.... no egg swapping?? No I didn't swap any eggs this season - didn't need to and the other strange chick had hatched just as this hen started to lay. yep the centre 2 feathers will be lighter- yellow on a green bird instead of dark, white on a blue bird Thanks for that the 2 youngest are spangles then but the oldest one's tail feathers were all the same. I'll try and take some more photos later today.

November 11, 200816 yr very nice, looks like the chicks are greywing too, I think both parents are visual greywings personally
November 16, 200816 yr Author Oldest chick has fledged yesterday - still not quite sure on the perch.
November 17, 200816 yr Greywing spangles are lovely. I have a greywing cobalt spangle. The second baby has a very blue bum, does that mean yellowface at all or do they feather up completely green in the end? I haven't really bred green series birds before, so I don't know what the babies are like. I did breed Emmett by accident, but his baby was a double factor spangle, so no colour on his tummy to tell.
November 17, 200816 yr Author yep the centre 2 feathers will be lighter- yellow on a green bird instead of dark, white on a blue bird Chick 3 - Spangle Hen Are you sure this one is a spangle ? I was just going by what 'the pie' said that if the centre 2 tail feathers were yellow it was a spangle?? Can't really tell in this photo but they were yellow. Edited November 17, 200816 yr by Denise
