Golden Cob Vs Trill

Featured Replies

Hey,

I currently feed my budgies and cockatiels Trill Cockatiel mix, and they love it, but I have heard some negative feedback on it so looking into other seeds specifically Golden Cob. What is your opinions please on both seeds.

Thanks,

Sam

i don't use either .. But if i was too I would use Golden Cob over trill !!!

Also remember if you are going to change your birds food... To do it slowly by mixing a small portion of the new seed with the old brand and each day increase the new seed ... Keep in mind too that change of feed will cause a moult ...

Hope you find the answers you are looking for

Preferably dont use something that comes from a supermarket or mass producer.

Fresh quality seed (without all the fancy coloured bits that do nothing) is best. Often brought from produce or bird stores. And they usually bag it themselfs (because they come in 20kg bags).

Without a doubt GOLDEN COB!

You can choose from Budgie Mix, Budgie Breeder Mix or Supreme Budgie Breeder Mix.

Sometimes I wonder though, if you buy seed in a 20kg bag.... can it go stale? :D

Not at the rate I use it Krosp!! I use a 30kg bag in about a month. The ones the pet shops buy don't go stale as they put them in smaller bags and sell them with their own labels on :D

Exactly MB. You wouldnt buy the 20kg bag for one bird. But some people go through HEAPS!. We bag it down into smaller sizes for people.

I used to work at a pet shop in Glen Waverley and spent about 6 hours a week just bagging seed from 40kg bags in to 1 and 2 kilo bags. The seed is sold quite quickly so it's always fresh :D

I use a 100 kilos of seed per month.....never goes stale. I use Golden Cob. Trill, as far as I know comes in little boxes in the supermarket. Not an economical way to feed my birds.

I used trill for about 5 years and I found it great up until recently when they started adding the red looking seeds that the budgies and tiels dont like to eat. I was wasting to much so i changed. My birds went into melt down for about 6 weeks when i changed their food :party0011:: Make sure any seed change is done slowly, especially when changing off trill!

If Trill produces a 20kg bad of canary seed than i will be VERY tempted to go back to it.

I like to use Golden cob also but it is much to expensive now so I have switched to Howard Martin Riverina mix which it has extra canary seed in it for breeding time. I buy the 40kg bag at $66.00.

Doesn't take me long to go through it.

I know this is an old post..but..

Since when have Trill made 10k bags? :laughter:

I use Trill millet and seed bells etc for my birds.

Also, I know the seeds you're talking about Liv...(I think they're called red panicum but I could be talking about something completely different) Almost every budgie and cockatiel seed mix seems to have them mixed in, and I agree, my birds don't touch them. When throwing out old seed from their bowl there are usually plenty of oat and millet husks, but no one ever eats the red ones..

 Yeah it would take a while for 2 budgies to eat 10kg ;)

Do you add anything like oats or sunflower seeds to your mix or just the straight Golden Cob mix?

I dont add anything to the seed mix, but do add smaller containers of various other seeds to the birds cages when appropriate. In winter for body warmth the birds get extra huled oats in dishes. Maybe twice a week they get a minimal amount of sunflower and maybe more sunflower in winter. Daily they get soft food and soaked seed which contains hulled oats and triticale wheat amongst other things.......I add sunflower and hulled oats to the babies food in the kindie cage.
