Posted October 27, 200816 yr Hi All, Boss has taken a liking to one of the toys in his cage . We first noticed he was having his way with the toy as it has a bell on the bottom and we could hear it ringing . It started off a couple of times a day and now it is all the time! i had a look in his cage yesterday and there was a huge pile of what looked like seed in the bottom of the cage underneath the toy. It didn't come out of his seed container as it was far away. i have been reading that budgies regurgitate there seed when they try and feed a mate, but i was just curious if this is what it was and if it is healthy for them to regurgitate so much seed? Also should i leave the toy in the cage and will he settle down eventually? Any advice would be great thanks
October 27, 200816 yr Author Remove anything reflective....bells and mirrors Thanks Kaz But he doesn't have any mirrors in the cage and i took all the reflective bells off his toys when he was small, this toy is made of rope and beads and the bell i put on the bottom of the toy is not reflective...this is why i can't work out why he is sooo attached or how to stop him Edited October 27, 200816 yr by Clare & Boss

Think like a budgie and see if you can work out what part of the toy he is attracted to and make that part either gone from the cage or so ugly he falls out of love with it  PS they also fall in lust with fuzzy rope.

Is it unhealthy for them? we took a toy out of his cage and put it in his play gym as he wouldn't comeout of his cage once i put this toy in and he didn't speak to us for ages. i make alot of toys for him and change them around so he doesn't get bored and normally he loves having new toys but he does get attached to some.
October 27, 200816 yr There is no doubt in my mind he will resent you!!! BUT... it is better he does that, then become aggressive and attack you when you put your hand in his cage if you get near his 'toy'... it can escalate to this over time. He'll get over it, trust me... he'll just have his 'knickers in a knot' so to speak for a little while.

Yeah he is fine with us going near the toy but i suppose it probably won't stay like that ...oh well have to do what is best for him. So it is not that this behaviour is unhealthy for them, it is that they can become aggressive??

It's not that healthy for them to become really attached to something... and it can mean your relationship suffers too... as they can love them more then they love you. They can turn aggressive towards you if you touch or go near their 'new friend' too. It doesn't always happen, but can. It's totally up to you, but If I was in your situation, I'd remove it and keep swapping and changing his toys... as you have been doing. You may be able to re-introduce the toy later and it may be different. Good luck
October 27, 200816 yr Author Thanks for your advice, just thought i would ask as i want him to be happy but also have a good relationship with me. I will make a new toy for him tonight (hopefullly not one that looks anything like a girl budgie !) and take out the other one. Thanks

It could be an age thing too. How old is he. If he is going through 'puberty' he may need to grow out of it too. Good luck and let us know how your randy little boy gets on!
October 27, 200816 yr I've had my boy for six months now and he's very much like your little man. Mine has a few reflective toys in his cage, but it is not these that pose an "infatuation problem"... it is his swing and water dropper ! I just make sure I get my hand in and around his cage often, give him lots of sleep when he's a bit randy, and rearrange his cage each fortnight or so. He seems to settle down if I'm dilligent about doing these things. It is rather funny to see him trying to "get it on" with a wooden swing! Edited October 27, 200816 yr by CaspersRose
October 27, 200816 yr I didn't see it mentioned but maybe I missed it but increase the cover hours on the cage for the next week to about 12-14 hours, it will help decrease the hormonal behavior, cute as it is regurigation food to nothing can be very frustrating to a bird at times you will find that they actually squawk more and bang up their toys because they are not getting the affection back.
